“The Modern: A Unique Take on a Blast From the Past”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 25, 2010

I never stayed in a Travelodge, but remember seeing them as a kid, and I really liked the work the Modern team has done to make the property a unique mid-century modern travel experience. Granted the place isn't opulent, but it is extremely comfortable and well-turned out, with Aveda toiletries, complimentary business center, continental breakfast with fresh-squeezed juices, rainshower bath, i-pod dock, and great bedding with triple sheeting, which is becoming less and less common.

The bar area and outdoor courtyard make it easy to stay at the hotel to socialize, but the rest of the city is just a few minutes away by foot. As others have mentioned, the Boise Greenbelt is a great place to exercise, Big City Coffee just down the street makes for a good stop, and the shops, restaurants, and capitol building make Boise a pleasant place to knock off a day.

The hotel just switched over to the complimentary service of the Boise Shuttle to and from the airport. I called the hotel upon deplaning and only waited a couple of minutes for the shuttle, which took only 20 minutes both going to the hotel and back to the airport. Boise lacks a true luxury hotel and I don't find the Grove to be impressive, so I lean toward either Hotel 43 or The Modern. You get a bit more luxury at Hotel 43, but for something memorable and unique, The Modern is the game to beat right now.

Loved the Modern. The bar was one of my favorite parts. The drinks were very creative and delicious! The room was quite comfortable and the shower was nice. Everything was clean and the staff was very nice. I will stay here again.

If you are tall, up to 8 feet tall, the showers here are made for you. They come out of the ceiling in a large shower stall. The beds and decor are from the 1960s but of nice quality and style. The bed was wonderful. The food at the bar was gourmet quality and very good--cooked by a chef. The people were warm and friendly. It has a nice breakfast served in the bar. The bar is light and airy--very pleasant atmosphere. The hotel is centrally located to ge anywhere in Boise you would like to go. We really enjoyed our stay.

Art deco refurbished motel with a cozy bar a few blocks from Old Boise downtown. Nice staff, quick check-in, clean room. Large walk-in shower was different but nice.

Liked the access to hotel bikes and yes, in January there was a weather break, so a bike ride was fun.
Downtown Boise is a nice lively place.

Spent 3 weeks in Modern in 2007 business trip. Its location is perfect for evening walk to the city center. Boise river greenbelt is a couple of blocks away and very convenient for jogging. Gym (and all kinds of other sport activities such as swimming pool, volleyball, basketball,...) is available in the nearby YMCA - passes provided by Modern.
There was a lot of space in suite. Microwave, Refrigerator. Cooling/Heating. Bathrooms are big... in addition to bath there was a shower that could probably fit giraffe. Nice atmosphere in the bar with wireless internet access. Kind staff.

I would definitely return and strongly recommend it.

We (a family from Paris, France) stayed one night at Modern Hotel on our way to Seattle. Hotel very nicely remodeled, great suite with a lot of space and an impressive bathroom, very good breakfast, well everything was great ... until I looked at my account when getting back home. I had payed twice for the room, payed through Expedia, and then charged again on my Visa card. And it took my 2 months, 3 phone calls, several mails without answers, until I got angry, and finally got reimbursed after some fighting. So if you stay there, you'll be happy, but watch out your account !

My friend and I stayed here while travelling across the country. It was sort of what you'd expect a modern hotel to look like if it was the 60s. Kind of funky, clean straight lines, big rooms, form before function bathrooms... We had a suite, which was nice, a separate bedroom, and the bathroom was enormous with a separate tub and shower with waterfall spout from the ceiling. It was quiet, the staff was friendly, and I'd recommend this hotel to anyone who ended up in miserable Boise, ID. Oh yeah, you could walk to all the amazing nightlife of Boise from here. Not too shabby.
