“Excellent food”

I have had dinner here about 7 times over the last 6 months and I have grown to love this place. I wonder why people don't talk about it like they do other downtown restaurants that are cranking out good eats. This is authentic Basque food, and I love it. My fav meals so far have been the chicken and leg of lamb. They have delicious mashed potatoes, soups, salads and bread too. The service is always friendly and attentive, a great place to enjoy a nice meal.

“Fabulous authentic Basque food”

We had just one night in Boise. We stayed at a B&B and asked the proprietor, who was obviously a real foodie, for a recommendation of where to get good Basque food. He unhesitatingly pointed us to Leku Ona, and he was right to do so! Appearance-wise, it is pretty informal, clean and nice but plain wooden tables and little by way of decor. So what? The food is great. We asked our server--a Basque woman who we later learned was the manager--what their specials were. She said, "Well, if people say they want real authentic Basque food, I always recommend the squid, the tongue, and the tripe, but then half the people say that is too authentic and order the chicken." Not for me. I ordered the tripe and it was as good as any I have ever had in North America. My wife wasn't too hungry so she ordered from the Tapas menu (mislabled "Appetizers") and got a fabulously good leek pie. We had some good Basque wine to wash it down. My regret is not being able to go back another time for an all-tapas meal, many attractive selections. And if you're afraid of tripe and tongue, don't worry, there are steaks, pork chops, lamb stews, chicken, hallibut, and other such on the menu.

“Overpriced , poor service, bad food”

Don't bother. We visited Boise and discovered it's large Basque community- wanted the Basque experience. This restaurant is a complete disappointment. We should have gotten a clue when we were one group of two in the restaurant. Horrible service (waiter wanted to take wine glasses off the table before we ordered anything) Started with red bean and chorizo soup - not terribly interesting or tasty, very small green salad and Beef tenderloin $29 - good size, potato bacon pie tasted off (as in, old and NOT fresh),heavily seasoned and salty green beans. Waiter obviously uncomfortable and needed much prompting to provide information about items on menu. Entire party of four disappointed and can not recommend.

“Leku Ona”

The Basque name means 'A good place' and it lives up to its name. Downstairs is casual and upstairs is fine dining. Climb the stairs to the charming dining room which gives views of the street scene below and also with nooks and crannies it is private enough for a romantic dinner. The Red Beans and Chorizo Soup is served family style in a large bowl with giant ladle. It is rich and filled with chunks of spicy chorizo. They offer a full selection of a dozen starters, a dozen meat dishes and another dozen fish and seafood selections. Any one is a meal in itself. The lamb meatloaf is two huge slices of thick and flavorful meat with a tangy tomato sauce. Along side on the plate are three ice cream scoops of delicious mashed potatoes (this is Idaho) and a bushel of green beans. Service is a little casual for 'fine dining' but the food is so good it doesn't need a snobbish server bringing it to you.

“Good But Not Great”

We were really looking forward to this meal based on recommendations by locals and Lonely Planet, which billed it as a tapas place. However, it was a full menu and overall a feeling of being dated. We had appetizers only in an attempt to feel like tapas. Two out of three were quite good and well-presented but the third was extremely average, more like bar food. Service was slow and clumsy. The server should be serving in a pizza parlor or some other fast food joint not a full service restaurant like this. Nice bread but no bread plate and only hard wrapped pats of butter. Decor was dull and dated, carpeting way past its expiration date.
