“Great Location, Service and Price Point”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 17, 2013

From the service in the "Back Office" (thanks Shelly) to the front desk staff to the cleaners and bell hops, everyone was very eager to make our stay as easy as possible. All the room amenities were perfect, great/comfortable king bed, super walk in rain shower, flat screen and free wifi. We booked thru Hotels.com. Included buffet breakfast was very good (not super but just fine). The rooftop bar/restaurant provides great views and comfortable furniture. The location is very easily walked to many eateries, banks and services. Highly recommended. Airport shuttle is MYR30 each way for 2pax.

The hotel is strategically located in the town of Tawau. The sea view on 3rd floor and above is nice. The room equipments are very new and the room is big. There is a Pub in front of the Hotel where guest can enjoy a happy hour drinking here. Hotel staff are nice. However the breakfast is a bit below par with just a few type of food served.

Room Tip: Choose those 3rd floor and above with sea view.

I spent three nights at the LA and found it to be a good quality, clean, modern property. The staff were helpful and friendly. The rooms come with a small basic minibar; a flat screen tv with limited channels (movies and sport - the addition of an English language news channel would be nice) and a very spacious shower. An additional attractive feature of the hotel is the top 2-storey bar/restaurant that is quite classy - with excellent seafood, very reasonably priced. The top level is open air, with a nice view of the entire area. The floor below has outside dining as well as an inside area.

The hotel is quite central - Tawau isn't very big and if you don't feel like walking then taxis are plentiful and inexpensive.

Breakfast is basic and needs to be improved. Several of the buffet trays were completely cold, but others were warm. Why everything isn't warm is a mystery to me - a tray full of cold baked beans is not very appealing. Also given the abundance of cheap good quality local fruit in the nearby markets it is also a surprise that there is not more available at the buffet.

In summary - the good points far outweigh the minor deficiencies, especially for the reasonable room rate. The hotel is still new, so presumably the staff are still fine tuning the place. The rooftop bar is highly recommended.

Room Tip: The higher the room, the nicer the view.

Most of the hotels in Tawau - including those that are widely bookable on the hotel web sites - we're built many years ago and raise the almost-certainty of being tatty and in need of investment to refurbish. I was very happy to find a hotel that only opened in June. The LA Hotel.

Prices vary according to the floor (the sea view is highly priced) but I don't think the rooms are any different. What you get is a new hotel bedroom. Relatively cheaply furnished in Ikea-quality stuff but clean and clearly new. Tea/coffee, HDTV, fridge with soft drinks and - incredibly for Malaysia - beer.

Across from the entrance is the bar that does does a good job. It may well be one of the better night spots in this small town. Breakfast - very local food - is included and served as a buffet downstairs. We asked for and were given fresh scrambled eggs when the curried chicken defeated us at this time of the morning.

The staff are all friendly and they arranged a transfer to the airport in the morning for RM30.

No reason not to stay here as long as they keep it in good condition.

It is just open in June 2012, everything is new. Infrastructure is still in good condition, parking is free, Sky bar on the roof is still under renovation, opposite is function hall and pub. However it is no swimming pool, gym and spa in this hotel.
I love the bed and pillow, it is too comfortable. The pillow not too soft and didn't make my neck pain… It is many satellite channels for your choice, daily drinking water provided; it is enjoyable to stay in the room. Free wifi is provided with password, one password is valid for one device per day.
Front office – Mohd Sabry, he is very helpful and understanding, initiative to fulfill customer’s requirement if reasonable.
Breakfast is disappointed, slow replenishment, same menu, limited choice and staff are not initiative. They are just chatting at the counter whereas many tables are waiting them to clean, it is looks like insufficient manpower, but their attitude shows their performance.
We need to order the egg at the counter, but no show and no one will tells you on this, after that need self-collection, and the staff just standing there and looking at you, NOT helpful at all.
We did visit the pub and had some drinks, one waitress just only able to take your order, deliver food and remember to collect payment from you. Other than that, other question you try to ask, she will answer you “don’t know”, or “not understand”. It is really speechless.
Location is fine, side of the downtown, walking is not a problem, few restaurants just next to the hotel. Further down is commercial district with many banks, after that is old town and Tawau’s pasar. But it is not recommended to walk under the hot sun. Eastern mall, the largest shopping mall in Tawau with cinema just further up to the other side, Front office told me will cost RM15.00 one way by using taxi to Eastern mall, hence we chose to walk and spend less than 15mins.

Room Tip: Normal range will do, is good enough for budget travelers .

This is a very new hotel so everything was clean and sparkling. It is pretty close to the Central Business district. The restuarant is only open for breakfast, included in price of rooms, but there are several small cafes nearby, if you want beer etc the hotel has a pub and Bistro which had extremely pleasant food but of course was more expensive than the local Malaysian cafes. It is open from 5p.m. and is opposite the main hotel.Breakfast is adequate and you can get eggs etc but no bacon! If you want a Malaysian breakfast there are a lot of choices. Beds were very comfortable.

Room Tip: If you can afford it take the Sea View rooms, these rooms have the best view. Although they overlook...
