I stayed in Hotel Shervinton for three nights (20-23 November 2012). As I was in Tawau for a meeting, I only used the hotel room to sleep and complete some paperwork. As a whole, I'm quite happy with the hotel and will definitely book a room next meeting. Checking in with an Agoda.com voucher was no problem, although I had to pay a deposit of RM50, which they returned at check out time. Strangely my colleague who had a similar voucher didn't have to pay the deposit. Well we checked in at different times so perhaps one staff was forgetful or the other was over diligent. Or maybe I just looked like a suspicious character...haha.
The room was quite spacious (deluxe room) and had a flatscreen TV, a queen bed, ironing board, iron, electric jug kettle, sachets of tea, coffee, sugar & creamer, two complimentary mineral water bottles every day, toiletries (soap, shampoo, ear buds, toothbrush, toothpaste, shower cap), free newspaper everyday.. can't remember the rest. The TV channels offered were rather decent. ASTRO. I noticed sports channel (wasn't interested), a movie channel...what I wanted were the news channels and my favourite was Al Jazeera. Wifi was free although I didn't really bother using it. The maintenance people asked me how the connection was, although I called them to help me switch the TV on. How was I to know the power button was on the side of the screen..LOL. Anyway they mentioned that WiFi reception was better 'the other side', so they were wondering if my WiFi connection was okay. Told them it wasn't a problem. So anyone who wants to book a room and MUST have good WiFi connection will need to ask for a room on the 'side' where the WiFi is good. Anyway the lobby had a small room where one could use the two internet-able computers free of charge.
Breakfast was good. Usually if the breakfast wasn't good 'enough', I'd be on the street hunting down local coffeeshops. I remember noodles, rice, porridge + condiments, fluffy buns, croissants, three choices of juice, coffee, tea, chicken, hash browns, cakes, bread, toaster (gadget!), prawn dumplings (prawns were delicious, about 1.5 inches in diameter!) and a friendly chef who prepared my eggs 'sunny side up and not too runny and not too hard'.
One other reason I like this hotel is its location next to a taxi stand, supermarket, coffeeshops and OTHER hotels. The hotel was in a shop block and shared the same street with five other hotels. This is good because if one upsets you, you can just check out and walk ten steps to another. You can see a map of Tawau hotels at http://www.etawau.com/Hotel/Shervinton_Hotel.htm. The taxi stand is between Hotel Shervinton and Milimewa Superstore.
An interesting thing. The bathroom in the deluxe room I booked had no door. Only a curtain separated the toilet area from the small alcove where the bathroom sink was. The shower cubicle walls were made of frosted glass. If I shared the room with a colleague, this may have posed some problems, especially during productive times on the throne. Maybe I got a honeymoon room.
