“Don't Stay More than One Night”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 14, 2011

We were part of a group that had to stay overnight in Tawau, I suspect the same as Davies 72. We did not get off to a good start as when trying to check in, I was standing right at the desk and was completely ignored by the staff! They seemed to be doing paperwork so we waited patiently. However, after 5 minutes of no acknowledgement whatsoever, I finally walked over to the very end of a long desk and said to a young man standing there "We need to check in". Very sad that one would have to do that and not a very good first impression. On the whole, though, the staff seem pleasant and try to be helpful.

The Promenade tries very hard to be a 4-star hotel with seemingly modern and nicely furnished rooms on their website. However, the reality is the whole place has a feel of slight griminess to it, as though it is never quite clean. The furnishings appear nice in pictures, but in reality, they are very cheap construction, and need desperate repair or replacement. We were given a twin room (we didn't have a choice in the matter due to our large group). The carpet had not been vacuumed and either had stains or bits of lint? (I hope) on it. A chair in the corner was upholstered in cheap fabric that was splitting in numerous areas on the seat. A/C was barely adequate and like we had heard from others in our group, a noxious smell would often waft from the drain on the bathroom floor. I took care of this by folding a towel on top of it. Beds were on the hard side, but fairly comfortable. The flat-screen tv worked well, and surprisingly had a good selection of channels.

We had the buffet for dinner, and it wasn't too bad. Some dishes of course, were done better than others and we were pleasantly surprised by the desserts. Service was quite good, and the manager of the restaurant was extremely pleasant and helpful. He, in fact, was the best thing we found about the hotel. Breakfast was done better, with a good assortment of tropical fruit and a omelet/egg station. Some of the waitstaff on breakfast duty, it seems, have learned the "ignore them and they might go away" technique of the front desk.

Like others have said, the hotel is a long way out of town - there is small mall attached and has enough to amuse one for an hour or two. There is a hawker court in the basement and we did find some decent Chicken Rice for lunch, plus if you're looking for some foodie souvenirs from Malaysia, the supermarket is fun to browse.

Would we return? I suppose if we had to we would, as this is supposedly the best hotel in town, but I think our main goal would be to not overnight in Tawau again!

Stayed here 1 night before a diving trip to Sipadan. Paid approximately $60USD through Agoda. Rooms were nice, and hotel was perfectly fine - no major problems..everything was clean and efficient. Given that I had arrived fairly late, there were not much food options outside of the hotel without getting completely lost. Everything was closed in the run-down connected mall, except for pretty much the convenience store.

The breakfast buffet the next morning was quite adequate for the $7USD or so, quite expensive by Malaysian standards but had everything you could possibly want.

Even though I had booked (and paid) through Agoda, the hotel tried to charge me the full nights room (again). I had surrendered Agoda's certificate the night before but after explaining they relented.

Stayed here only for 1 night as part of an unplanned delay in boarding a ship. The rooms were all pretty basic and all seemed to be twin bedded. The air-conditioning wasn't particularly effective and the bathrooms were fairly ordinary - a bit smelly and the toilet leaked. One night was just okay but I wouldn't like to have been there any longer. Buffet dinner and breakfast were alright and the staff were nice, they tried to be helpful but were reasonably disorganised and hopeless. There is a dingy looking shopping mall underneath the hotel which has a supermarket, food shops and even a Body Shop of all things. This hotel is a fair way out of the centre of town and you would need to take a taxi in and out - although there isn't really anything to see or do in central Tawau.

I was there for a week for business trip and requested a queen size bed on the first day i checked in. They told me that the room was running out although I have put the request in the booking form.

The receiption ask me to remind them the next day. I reminded them the next morning before i went out for business trip and they agreed to change the room for me. By the time i came back from business trip in the evening they told me the room for queen size bed runs out again.

My colleague courier a box of name card to me and I have informed the reception to keep it for me once they received.

I have asked for a few days yet the hotel receiption inform me that they did not receive any of my name card. I have to spend an hour to check with the courier company here and there and end up i found that they have send my name card to their office.

I requested a breakfast box in one of the morning at 5am but when i arrived there in the morning. Nothing has been prepared and i got to wait for half and hour for the kitchen to get it done.

Anyway, Tawau is a small town and basically you do not have much choice when we talk about hotel in Tawau.

The plus point is it connect to a shopping mall and you may get some basic things easily and there is also a food court inside the shopping mall provides variety of food.

Stayed only as a stop over from Kuala Lumpur to Sipadan Dive resort due to the ferry timetable.
Was very pleasantly surprised as we booked using Agoda and didn't expect much... I would say it matches any 4 star UK hotel and perfact for what we needed...
It mightn't be a spot for a stand-alone holiday although that's unfair as we didn't really look around Tawau, but I can say that I would most def be back for another stay..
No disappointments whatsoever...

Decided to stay here as the reviews were reasonable for me. It was a one night affair en route to Sipadan. The room was clean & spacious. I love the convenience of having the mall next door which had eateries & a supermarket.

However, It is a bit far from the Sempora jetty. Took us more than hour to get there on the speeding mini bus.

On my way back to Semporna from Sipadan, I got a glimpse of a hotel facing the waters called Seafest hotel from the speedboat. Perhaps that would have been a better choice. Someone please check that out!!!

Room Tip: 1309 was great! Right at the end.

The rooms are clean and good. But pillows are not very comfortable thus we asked for a change to the polyfibre type. Room has great view of the sea. Hotel has a shopping centre in the next building , very convenient for it guests staying here. Tight security system to ensure non in house guest could access to any floor without a key card to operate its lift.!!!!
