I spent a week in the Savannah/Charleston area and Ft Pulaski was the highlight. The tour was brief and informative. The guide was able to give an enormous amount of interesting information in a short time. It was almost chilling to be in a place where so much history took place. You can almost hear the cannons firing and officers barking orders at soldiers. It is amazing how the fort is in such good condition.

We arrived at 1pm, we made it just in time to watch the informative 20 minute video (highly reccomended) to get the history of the fort in the visitor center. We thought the interesting mounds/tunnels in the front were totally cool. Inside the main fort we saw all the different rooms, bunks, powder magazine and the important places. At 2:00 there was a musket demonstration (it started a little before 2, so make sure to get there early if you want to see the demonstrations-they just started once a few people showed up).

We finished with the fort at about 2:45 and went back to the visitor center for the gift shop. We thought it was strange that there was a book on John Wesley, but then saw the sign for the monument. It was on this island that he landed as a missionary.

The breeze was lovely and the fort was worth a tour if you enjoy historical sites.

“The fort that made forts obsolete”

Projectile shaped artillery from Union guns crumbled one wall of Fort Pulaski signaling the end of the fort as invincible fortress and adding to the Confederate forces losses - although few casualties. Robert E. Lee served his first assignment here constructing the fort. Especially wonderful is the access to the ramparts (hold your young kids' hands here, please) from which you can survey the mouth to the river, Hilton Head to the north and Tybee Island to the southeast. Interpretive movie at the visitor center, scheduled ranger-led tours and lush setting. 20 minutes from historic Savannah on your way to or from Tybee Island.
