“Wear your walking shoes!”

We also loved the informative movie, the gun demonstration, and walking around the inside and outside of the fort. Be sure to look for the cannon ball holes/indentations, and for the alligators in the moat! I would suggest bug repellant if you plan to walk around the outside, to keep the "no see ums" away, and good walking shoes!

If one is interested in history, particularly Civil War buffs, this is a place one must visit. With the grounds been almost completely open for one to explore (with the only exception being a few of the rooms in the fort, i.e. the quartermasters store and officers barracks), one can easily spend a couple hours just meandering around the park grounds. Also, a quick walk to the John Wesley monument is quite a beautiful little walk. In the early hours, one may see quite some wildlife on this little walk. My father and I got within 30 yards of a deer that was also out foraging. Keep your eyes peeled for the alligators and turtles in the moat as well.

Check on-line for the hours for the tour and musket firing demonstration (cannon-firing demonstration on Saturday). Also, look up at the ceiling in the barracks on the Northwest corner for the faint remains of some paintings done by Union soldiers. Near the powder storage in the NW corner, there are some interesting carvings into the bricks dating back to some of the forts early inhabitants.

Great place for visitors of all ages to visit. If you are going there, bring the bug spray regardless of the time of year (I was bitten by sand gnats in the middle of November).

“Little Know Highlight”

Fort Pulaski National Monument

Jan 14, 2008

We spent 3 hours here and loved every minute of it. We had resarched it before our trip and magnificence of it didnt let us down. The history was facinating and the views spectacular. I especially loved the indentations of the cannon balls in the brick walls. The ground were flawless and the little trail to the John Wesley memorial was a pleasant surpise.

We watched the video first then walked out to the fort. Alot of ground to cover there. A soldier gave us a riffle demo and a little talk. Lot of history.

I spent a week in the Savannah/Charleston area and Ft Pulaski was the highlight. The tour was brief and informative. The guide was able to give an enormous amount of interesting information in a short time. It was almost chilling to be in a place where so much history took place. You can almost hear the cannons firing and officers barking orders at soldiers. It is amazing how the fort is in such good condition.
