Called in for lunch midweek. Great setting in pretty village, attractive decor, relaxed atmosphere, great welcome and attentive waitress in providing menus and specials, bringing drinks to table, talking about the area.
Menu reads well but execution not good - my wife's steak pie was piping hot but mediocre in flavour, my pan fried brill was lukewarm but OK - however the accompanying very slim shaped rosti was inedible - soggy and had turned grey inside, and the green beans were not trimmed and were hard - I would guess a bit old in truth. Pricing is mid range restaurant level in my view so expectation is raised versus pub food.
Manager dealt with my comments very professionally including asking if we had been asked if the food was OK after serving which had not happened (due to independent beer line testing occurring unexpectedly it seems, which deflected the staff) - removed meal cost from bill and spoke to chef, as did I.
The chef was a bit resistant to polite criticism but agreed to look at the way the rosti are prepared. I would be interested to see if there is any subsequent change.
