“Just a dream”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 29, 2012

Great experience! A magic place with wonderful fishes and corals.
We stayed there for 8 days and every day was a new discovery. At the airport, the ground assistance in Bali was perfect organized, even when an unexpected problem appeared. As we arrived on the island, we became a warm welcome and we were able to get in our bungalow very quickely. The dives were very interresting and our dive guide was very motivated to show us a lots of tiny little fish specimens. Simply amazing! The restaurant offered plenty of good things to eat(buffet) and the quality and the menu's ideas were nearly the same as in a 4*. The manager and his staff were always soucieux to make sure that everything was perfect. As soon as we'll have the opportunity to go back to Wakatobi, we'll do it.
A warm thank you to Lorenz and his team and all the best for the future.

We did a 5 day resort and 5 day Pelagian dive trip in June 2012.

The dives are very well organised, we were always 4 divers to 1 DM. The briefing was clear, DMs are often looking out for our comfort and safety and showing us the marine life.

Resort is very comfortable, room is well equipped with conveniences (select bungalow 3). We did have some problems with leaking water and no hot water supply but that was swiftly fixed.

Food and service at the restaurant was also fantastic. By the 2nd day, the staff already knew us by name and knew our preferred seating place! They were friendly and would chat up with us and check on how we were doing. As it was my husband's birthday, they sprung us a surprise - walking out from the kitchen singing a birthday song with a birthday cake lit up with candles! Now that's going the extra mile about great service!

As for the Pelagian, equally top rated. Exceptional service, warm and friendly staff, beautiful cabin and again food was delicious!

The Cruise Director (Vanessa) is full of enthusiasm, attentive both below and above water. Made sure that guests are well taken care of.

Wakatobi is really a place where the guests are in its heart of its service.

These people seem to have thought of everything.
Arrival in Bali is handled for you - visa purchase and immigration,
When you leave Bali for Wakatobi it is also impressively easy, they handle it all.
We had a Select Bungalow and could not fault it, the outdoor shower was excellent.
All staff at the resort are happy, friendly and helpful, they know your name from the start.
The restaurant was a pleasure to use, I loved the food.
They have a good system of boards where you add your name for which of the three trips a day you want to join for snorkelling.
Your gear is stored in crates and taken to and from the boat for you.
It was usually just the two of us snorkelling and a guide is provided each trip, the divers seem to dive for 70 minutes so we were in the water about 90 minutes each trip.
No really big fish but vast numbers and variety of small ones, the coral is virtually all alive.
The only negative we have is the heat and humidity - we only snorkelled once a day and read and relaxed the rest of the day - the weather drove you to the aircon in your room because it was just too hot on the loungers or on the verandah.
It is a long way to go, and Singapore Airlines aren't that comfortable, but I would love to return.

Room Tip: I would go for a villa or a select bungalow for the outside shower (assuming villas have them)

Dear mickw952,

Thank you for taking time out to share about your recent trip to Wakatobi Dive Resort. It goes without saying that we appreciate your describing your experience as a snorkeler at Wakatobi, a destination renowned for scuba diving. It is our philosophy to put as much love and care towards an optimal experience for snorkelers as we do for all levels of divers. It is nice to hear from an enthusiast like yourself who takes the time to inform others that snorkeling at Wakatobi is indeed wonderful.

We hope to see you again soon.

Kind regards,

The Wakatobi Resort provides excellent diving opportunities and great living accommodations. You have to appreciate what it takes for the management and staff to provide top notch service when you are 2 ½ hours plane ride from Bali. From the moment you arrive in Bali, Wakatobi staff is there to assist and guide you through the process of obtaining your visa, processing through immigrations, picking up your luggage and transport to the hotel. The VIP service offered by Wakatobi is worth the price for a couple. Then when it is time to fly to Wakatobi (you must fly into Bali at least the night before but you could come in 2 – 3 or more days earlier if you want to see Bali or recover from jet lag if you traveled from USA or Europe). On travel day they pick you up at your hotel, take you to the airport, handle your luggage, guide you to the VIP lounge and then onto the plane. You land 2 ½ hrs later on a small island where they meet and greet you and whisk you away by car then by boat to Wakatobi. The latter is about 30 mins from the time you land. You are met at the resort and given a tour as you walk to your accommodation. Your luggage arrives shortly afterwards as you are settling in or while you are having your lunch. You are assigned a dive boat and your dive guide – they call themselves “dive experience managers” and they inform you how they set up your gear and show you how to test your tank air if you are using Nitrox. You can do an afternoon shore dive that same day. The next day starts boat diving to the various dive sites. Diving from a boat are 3 times a day + unlimited shore diving. The whole week is planned out with sites and dive times – normally depart at 07:30 for a 2 tank dive (they usually come back to the resort between dives so you could skip the early morning dive if you like to sleep in). You come back for lunch then the single tank afternoon dive is at 2:30. You can do a late shore dive you like to make it 4 dives per day. When you do a shore dive they will guide you as to which way the current is flowing and how to signal when you come to surface. Then a smaller “taxi” boat will pick you up if you could not make it to one of the entry/exit points due to current or lack of air. All boat dives were 70 minute duration. Your shore dives could be longer but that is also your plan time. We hit 75 ft. (23 m) as our deepest dive over a full 6 days of diving. Going deep is not required as majority of reefs, sponges, sea fans, and fish life are shallow. Most dives started at 60 ft. (18 m) then you gently rose as you progressed through the dive. Normally your last 10 mins was above 30 ft. (9 m) so you had nice long safety stops after repetitive diving. The nearest chamber is in Bali (2 ½ hrs. by air) so conservative diving ensures you have an enjoyable dive vacation for both you and the staff. They plan one night dive and forego the afternoon dive that day. You can still do a shore dive if you wish or just skip the night dive if you prefer. You really set your own schedule as to diving other than the boat goes out at specific times. If you want to do a shore dive, you just need to inform them and they will carry your gear off of the boat and to your locker in the scuba huts. They will also carry your gear to the beach when you want to do your shore dive. The ratio of divers to dive guide was 5 to 1. Our group was 4 to 1 and once rose to 6 to 1 when a couple joined us for a couple of afternoon dives. So the boat may have 12-14 divers but each group goes off separately and at different parts or may wait 5 mins between entering the water. It is very high customer service with regard to your diving pleasures.
Most every diver has a camera of some type and size. There were many sophisticated systems in use both for video and photography. There were also some excellent point and shoot systems that were in use as well. All seem to take excellent pictures. There is a dedicated camera room with sufficient outlets for charging all of the batteries, lights, etc. Everyone has its own work space.
The accommodations are nice. We stayed in a Select Bungalow which is on the beach. It has a nice main room that has nice windows with screens and is air-conditioned. The bathroom is not air-conditioned but is under the main roof. The shower is outside in its own enclosed garden with high walls. The shower area also has a rack for drying your swimsuit and other clothing. You leave your wetsuit on the boat to hang dry between dives and at night. The bed has a mosquito net on it so if you wish you can enclose your bed each night although there are not many mosquitos there are some so it is handy to use. For the little time you actually spent in the room – it was adequate. Others said that both the beach bungalow and the garden bungalow were nice as well. The longer term plan is that they will convert all beach bungalows to the select bungalow style. We had a nice porch facing the beach (wish it had a ceiling fan as it got sticky hot) along with a hammock and 2 beach chairs. The restaurant is all open air and a buffet for all meals. There is such a variety each day that you really do not think of it as buffet. The wait staff is friendly and after a day or so, not only do they know your name but they know what type of food you prefer, your type of beverage, etc. You can request anything if you do not like the buffet. One night it was mainly shell fish along with some other meat. We wanted to have fish due to allergies of shell fish. It was a simple request and we were served nice fresh baked and/or grilled fish. My only negative about the restaurant is that it can get hot if no sea breeze. They try to have some fans on the floor level but it does not push enough air around. We tried to sit on the outside edge of the restaurant to have any breeze. We suggested installing some nice overhead ceiling fans on the high vaulted ceiling. There was a bar – called the Jetty Bar – at the end of the main pier in front of the resort. It was very nice on a breezy night.
The whole resort is “barefoot” friendly. They do encourage the use of footwear in the restaurant or other facilities. It is assumed it tracks in too much sand and there are foot wash basins at the restaurant, at your room, at the main lobby, at the camera room, etc. They say there is 150 staff for 50 guests. The service was excellent and everything ran smoothly. Management was visible every day. We happen to meet the owner and the general manager during the first couple of days but they did not go around introducing themselves. On the last day as we were on the boat to go to the airport island for the return trip the resort manager thank everyone for visiting Wakatobi. I overheard some say that they did not know who he was until then. It seems that the management should do introductions the first night upon arrival so the guests understand who everyone is. The dive manager and room manager did introduce themselves during the first day and night as you entered the restaurant or at the dive center.
The age group during our stay was mid-40s. There were some young families with children up to older married couples or singles who have been diving for 30+ years. There is a kid’s center so the families were able to dive while staff played with the children. It was a child friendly resort but not obtrusive if you did not have children or do not care to be around children. All of the families were super friendly and the children were delightful. There were 5 young (less than 5 yrs. old) children during our stay and not once did we hear complaints by anyone or the staff. I think the sun and the beach wears everyone out and early to bed each night. Since you are in a faraway place you might expect it be difficult to have communications. Well that is correct. While they have internet in your room (hardwired) and also wireless in the main lobby and lounge area, the bandwidth on the internet was super slow. Do not expect to download or upload any pictures or documents. You can barely read email. My cellular network did function for basic email. This could be a huge improvement if they could put in a larger bandwidth and extend wireless to the restaurant and other places in the resort (like your bungalow).
Overall, for a dive vacation – it was wonderful. The fish life and reefs were excellent. We saw many small creatures we have not seen before and the dive guides were great at finding and pointing out everything they could find. This is not a place to see large animals. The turtles were about the largest we saw although some did see a shark or 2 in the distance. The small animals are fascinating and there is an abundance of life on the shore dive.

Dear AB,

Many thanks for your detailed review. I would like to reflect on the one negative you raised: While the internet connection we currently offer on the island (satellite uplink to Singapore) offers the best connection for 300 miles in all directions, we do understand that for many of our guests our system compares unfavorably to the open-pipes available back at home, and this relative lack of connectivity can lead to discomfort.

We have been listening! It just so happens that the technicians traveled to the resort just several days ago to install our new system, using the IP Star network. This improved technology we have installed will at least double the bandwidth we have been able to squeeze from our current service provider.

Our intent is that everyone who leaves us is happy with every aspect of the experience. I'm glad that with the exception of the Internet connection, which we have since improved, this was the case with you too.

We hope to see you at Wakatobi again!

Kind regards,
Karen Stearns

It doesn't get any better than this. Wakatobi Resort is first class all the way. The resort is beautiful and clean with a wonderful staff and incredible food. Every person that works there knows your name before you even meet them. This is an incredibly organized resort and I can't say enough good about Wakatobi. It will be hard to vacation somewhere else after this experience. I just wish it was closer to the U.S.

Room Tip: We had a premier room on the beach. Great sunsets! Outside private shower was amazing.

I stayed at a select beach bungalow for 6 nights in September for a snorkeling holiday. It was a bit windy in the first few days but not much wind in the last few days that made the sea mirror calm. I made my booking in 2 months advance.

Getting there

Although the resort is on a remote island, it is not that difficult to get to. Once you have arrived Bali, all the following transportation to the resort are taken care of by Wakatobi. Easy and efficient.

Snorkeling (boat trips) – FANTASTIC

I joined 12 boat trips (I needed to put on a 3mm wet suit) during my entire stay. All of them ranged from good to excellent. Little to nearly no current, good to very good visibility, abundance to super abundance of corals / fishes. I was very impressed with the great variety of corals and how shallow they were. Snorkler could see a lot in Wakatobi. In the last snorkel at the Zoo, I saw eight turtles, a reef shark and a school of bumphead parrotfish. Other special things (to a snorkeler) that I had seen in these 12 trips included: cuttlefish, nudibranch, seasnake, false stonefish, lionfish (& juvenile), two-tone dart fish, fire dart fish, robust ghost pipefish, stingray, porcupine, pufferfish, moray eel, lobster, needlefish, trumpetfish, different types of anemonefish, triggerfish, butterflyfish, angelfish, surgeonfish, grouper, damselfish, soliderfish, squirrelfish, bannerfish, school of snapper, school of barracuda………

Normally 3 snorkeling trips (joining the dive boats) were organized daily but that also depended on the dive schedule. Only 2 morning trips were organized on the second last day as there was no diving trip scheduled on that afternoon. The group size was small, ranged from 1:1 to 1:4 and the duration of each snorkel was 70 minutes. The snorkeling guide was good. Drinks (instant coffee, tea, water and etc.), snacks (sandwich, cake, cookie, fruit and etc.) and towel were offered after each snorkel.

Snorkeling (house reef) – Great if the current was not strong

I snorkeled at the house reef twice. In the first snorkel (in the first afternoon after arrival), the experience was a little bit disappointed as the water was not clear and the current was very strong (it also changed direction suddenly). In the second snorkel (at time with least tidal change after checking the tide table posted in the Dive Centre – it was shaded in grey), the experience was totally different with little current and great visibility. The boat taxi took me to a spot that I could drift slowly along the drop towards the jetty. There were a lot of corals (soft, hard, sea fan, sponge) and fishes along the reef. I saw a mantis shrimp in the second snorkel.

Literally, you could snorkel as many times as you like in the house reef if you don't mind strong current.

Accommodation

The bungalow was basic, clean and comfortable. Mine was facing west that I could enjoy amazing sunset every evening. It was air-conditioned and had a ceiling fan. No TV, no WiFi. It had an outdoor shower but no indoor shower. Shower gel, shampoo, conditioner, hand wash and body lotion were provided. No mosquito problem but a lot of big red ants.

Food

I would rate the food good for its flavor and presentation. Most of the time, the meat dishes were a bit over cooked. Soup was always very good. I liked their red bean soup very much. Breads and rolls were also good when they were still warm (so go early during meal time). When I had my first meal in the restaurant, all the staff could already call me by name without any introduction : )

Spa

I tried a 90 mins balinese massage and a 45 mins foot massage. Nothing special.

Something that I felt great about the resort - Education and Conservation

A presentation on reef system was provided every night. A very nice touch was that several good books on reef and fishes were provided in room. I was so absorbed into reading them that I missed all other activities organized by the resort. When I received my confirmation of booking, it stated clearly that part of the sum that I paid contributed to conservation.

Something that I didn't expect - Group booking

I think Wakatobi is a very popular destination for diving clubs all over the world. At the time when I was there, 2 big groups of divers (from 2 diving clubs) formed the core clientele. It was nothing wrong or bad as I didn't feel neglected and all the guests were very nice. It was just not what I would have expected.

Something that could be improved – Collection of luggage on the night before departure

The return flight departed from Tomia at 8:00a.m. and the boat departed from Wakatobi at 6:30a.m. and thus I was requested to have my luggage ready for collection to the boat on the night before departure. I prefer the collection time to be at 5:00 – 5:30a.m. in the next morning.

Overall

Staying at the Wakatobi is pricey. Is it good value for money? To me, absolutely yes. The underwater scencery worths every penny. Moreover, I felt very safe during every snorkel, no matter I was snokeling in small group in the open sea or snorkeling alone in the house reef.

Room Tip: Only 4 select bungalows (No. 1 to 4) were directly on the beach, other select bungalows and beach bu...

We stayed at Wakatobi for 6 nights from Sept 22-28. Frankly after this experience, I an not sure how much I will enjoy anything else as much. The resort and the people that work so hard to make it the perfect experience can only be praised. There are a few experiences that really stood out.

Firstly, we had the concierge service added on to our package and I cannot recommend this highly enough. It was the best $500 ever spent. From the moment we signed up for this, our concierge Satria was a superstar. He helped with all our arrangements to and from Bali and Wakatobi. Even after our trip to Wakatobi, we were looked after for our entire stay in Indonesia. We were met at the airport each time we flew back into Bali from our other tours and taken care of at the airport. We were provided with a mobile so that we were always able to contact home if necessary. Satria also helped us organise all our tours in Bali and all our whims were catered for. Everything was so effortless and we never had to lift a finger.

3 Nights before our flight to Indonesia, I managed to break a part on my camera which could have ruined my whole trip as I was going there for photographic diving. (This has been a bucket list trip). I contacted all the places I could think of in the US, but was uncertain whether I would receive the part in time. I left an email with Wakatobi concierge with my dilema. By the next morning Stijn and Satria were on top of it. They managed to get the part in Singapore and was provided to me upon my arrival at Wakatobi. For that I am eternally grateful and can only sing praises. This is all before our arrival at Wakatobi.

Once at Wakatobi, everything was just PERFECT. All luggage and set up are taken care of immediately. The staff and management that work there are so friendly, once feels right at home. Everyone we came into contact with greated us by our names (not sure how they knew all of us) The accommodation is rustic but perfect for the island feel with AC readily available.

Sundowner drinks on the jetty bar are a must! Diving is so easy and the only thing you have to worry about is jumping in the water and enjoy the dive. I also liked how eco-aware the resort is. There is no harassment of the sea life and the pygmy seahorses are protected enough to ensure they while provide pleasure for future divers. If you have a choice in anyway, get Ketut as your dive guide. He is AMAZING!!! You just have to ask and somehow he finds (except a blue ring octopus ;) )

The food deserves its own review. It is a gastronomic explosion worthy of Michelin stars. Everything is served tapas style and you select freshly made plates of heavenly bites and if you feel like anything specific, you just have to ask. I recall rolling my eyes back daily with the taste bud explosions.

Yes - you may say its pricey, but in my opinion, worth every cent. We have been provided with memories of a lifetime and I can't wait to go back!
