“Southern Charm”

Sea Island Resort

Oct 23, 2007

Although extremely expensive, Sea Island boasts with southern charm. We had a great time playing the Seaside links three days in a row. It truly is a lovely and challenging course. However, the food was good but not excellent and the service was sometimes overbearing.

I'm a member of an investment club that takes an annual golf trip to some of the best golfing destinations in the United States. This year our trip was to Sea Island, Georgia and we had an outstanding time.

Because of the size of our group and in an effort to save a little money, we booked a nine bedroom oceanfront cottage (Cottage #52) as opposed to staying at the Cloister or in the Lodge. Even though the cottage was quite old, it was perfectly suitable for our needs and was acceptable in all respects.

The golf at Sea Island is excellent, with three courses (Retreat, Seaside and Plantation), all of which were impeccably maintained and groomed. Plenty of other golfing options within a 30 mile radius.

Dinner at the Georgian Room in the Cloister was sublime as we reserved the private dining room and were treated like royalty by the outstanding wait staff. The Beach Club provides buffet options for breakfast and dinner with an oceanfront view. Dining at the Lodge was equally fine, though we did not hit Colt and Allison (our checkbooks would only allow for one budget busting meal). Davis Love Grill at Retreat clubhouse was a greaty choice for a post round lunch.

Everywhere we went on property we were impressed by the professional and courteous manner of all the staff, including the caddies and golf pros at the courses. Definitely one of our best trips. One proviso, bring money and lots of it. Nothing is cheap, though there are some deals and packages that can be taken advantage of. All in all, highly recommended.

I went to Sea Island with my husband for a 4 day get away the last week in February 2007. It was bliss - we stayed in the beach houses which are located away from the main 'Cloister ' building. We had an obscured view of the beach but were still pleased. The room was very comfortable, clean, with up-to-date amenities and furniture.

The property is gorgeous and extensive - you have to explore the resort to find all the restaurants and activity options. We walked the beach and rented bikes - very relaxing.

The best part was everything's included - so no extra BS charge for internet use, the general Spa or gym. There is daily complimentary tea and treats from 3-5 that was a nice touch.

The hotel dinning was limited on casual fare. More dinning options are open during peak season. We did enjoy the meals we had, be prepared - it's expensive but worth it. There are some local restaurants a short drive away as well.

The service was the best we experienced yet (better then the Ritz & The Sanctuary in SC) - true Southern hospitality with no attitude. You could tell the staff was local and cared about the resort.

We came from Boston so it was a direct flight to Savannah and an easy drive to the resort.

Disappointments - the mineral pool was under construction and would of liked more casual options for breakfast and lunch.

We are staying here right now and getting treatment fit for kings and queens. These people cannot do enough for us. Every staff person is highly trained and qualified to work in this 5 star establishment. I can't believe the level of service. It is the best resort I have ever stayed in; ever. The food is awesome and every meal is a new adventure for us west coast folks. The area is delightful and we cannot wait to come back. The people here are the friendliest people I have ever vacationed around. I wish every hotel was as fine as this one. We are experiencing true southern hospitality in my opinion. The amenities and decor are beautifully done and they have spared no expense. The lovely new spa and the treatments available are outstanding And my husband said he could play this golf course everyday. Anyone with complaints is a whiner!

“Too big for its britches”

Sea Island Resort

Sea Island's arrogance has lost me as a customer for life. The front desk's attitude effectively turned me off from staying there - at $1500 a night for with (illogically) two queen beds with a marsh (not ocean) view, I wouldn't think they could afford to alienate many prospective guests. Upon renting a house in the area (a beautiful beachfront HOUSE on St. Simon's for slightly over a third that price per night), I thought I would get the wife some spa treatments at Sea Island. "Oh, no. Our services are strictly for Sea Island guests!" If you're looking to have your ego stroked through "exclusivity," Sea Island might be a fine place to go. If you'd prefer to leave the egos at work and enjoy a relaxing vacation, there are plenty of better options on the East Coast.
