Tour the gardens across the street! The docent was very knowledgeable and the inside of the church is a real gem!

“THE PHOTO IS WORTH 1,000 WORDS”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 23, 2013

The photo of this lovely white Episcopal church in a quiet setting near Fort Frederica is worth 1,000 words. It's a beautiful church in a beautiful setting. It's picture-perfect.

The church and its grounds are steeped in history. Although the present structure was built in 1884, the congregation was founded in 1736 as a mission of the Church of England. The Rev. Charles Wesley, who was the ordained priest of that church, conducted the first services inside a chapel at nearby Fort Frederica. His brother, the founder of Methodism, The Rev. John Wesley, Rector of Christ Episcopal Church, Savannah, visited and preached here under the Wesley Oak out front before and after his brother's departure due to ill health. John also served this congregation in 1737.

Christ Church Cemetery is on church grounds. The oldest tombstone is dated 1803. In addition to novelist Eugenia Price, James Gould, first lighthouse keeper of the St. Simons Lighthouse, is buried here along with John Couper, the St. Simons Island plantation owner who deeded 4 acres of land to the government in 1804 for the site of St. Simons Lighthouse.

Try to time your visit when the church is open for services or tours. At the time of my visit, tours were from 2:00 to 5:00 PM Tuesday through Sunday, except Easter and Christmas.

This was a nice "add-on" to my visit to Fort Frederica just down Frederica Road and the Wesley Monument to John and Charles Wesley which is further down the same road.

“must see”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 19, 2013

So much history, go by the trolly that leaves every day at 11:00, you'll get much more out of it, then go back to see the inside on your own
support the church, buy a cookbook

“Special place”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 17, 2013 via mobile

I have been visiting Christ Church since the 1970's. I am always drawn back to it when I visit the island. It seems to be an enchanting place that never changes. The church building is a fine example of true craftsmanship and the grounds are lovely. A must see. Oh, and their cookbook is excellent.

“Beautiful place”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 5, 2013

We went to Christ Church in the evening and walked around. It is a beautiful and peaceful place. The graveyard dates from the 1700's till now. There is also a memory walk across the street that is beautiful.
