“Christ's Church on St. Simon”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed July 15, 2011

The church is only open from 2-4 so if you arrive at any other time all you can do is walk around the cemetery and swat Mosquitos.

“Very Pretty and Peaceful”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 29, 2011

Beautiful grounds. We would have loved to seen insdie the church but it was closed for "construction". The grounds are covered in huge trees of various types. Very pretty. The church is surround by the cemetry with some of the oldest graves I had ever seen. My sister did not care for walking around the cemetry and looking at the graves but it is interesting to see all the types of headstones and how old some of them are. Across the street is the "gardens" with the fifteen foot cross which is really cool to see. Worth the stop.

“Call Before You Go”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 14, 2011

The Christ Church building on St. Simon's Island is an attractive structure in a quaint setting. We would have liked to see the inside of the building, but did not get to see it. We had checked prior to traveling to St. Simon's Island and knew in advance that the cemetary would be closed for maintenance, but at that time the web site did not state that the building would be closed. We weren't the only guests to be under the impression that the building would be open. When we walked up to the door, another woman was already there hoping to tour the building, and immediately after our arrival, another couple walked up to the church building. Unfortunately, goodwill was not established as the docent standing at the door exhibited some attitude as she told us all that everything was closed for the day. However, she was there waiting to give a tour to a group that was due to arrive any minute. It would have been nice if her demeanor had been more gracious. It would nave been great if she had invited us all to join the group that arrived 5 minutes later, but she didn't.

If we had known that Christ Church was closed entirely on that day, we would not have driven out to the church, and our first experience on St. Simon's Island would not have put a damper on our afternoon there. The web site has been updated since our attempted visit there, but I wouldn't count on it being up to date for future trip planning. I'd recommend anyone who wants to see the church building to call the church office before finalizing plans.

“Nothing prettier”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 29, 2010

When in the area , this is a must see. This is one of the most beautiful churches in the area. And the history amazing! I personally have painted this particular church several times. I have been coming here all my life.

“A classic church in a serene setting”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 21, 2010

Christ Episcopal Church is a classic white church on a quiet country road. Fronted by a lovely lawn, it's surrounded by huge oak trees which drip Spanish Moss. A more serene setting would be hard to find.

The first church was built here in 1820, but was nearly destroyed in the Civil War. The present church dates from 1884. The interior is done in beautiful warm woods and is very welcoming. There are several nice stained glass windows, including a unique one of the church itself.

The cemetery outside is very interesting, and contains many old headstones. The oldest one I found marked the burial of a soldier killed in the War of 1812, and was still easily readable.

It is delightful to stroll around this quiet, peaceful cemetery and visit this pretty church.
