“Not worth the fuss”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed July 8, 2006

They really try hard to accommodate large parties. Once seated you are immediately treated (and I use the term loosely) to salad that is dripping in an overwhelming tangy/vinegar dressing. They will give you menus upon request but for our table of eight, we received two. Our waitress was very pleasing. Steaks are 'HUGE" and the price tag is just as large with most side items al-la-carte. Most of our family members enjoyed the flavor of their steak but the price of the meal was hard to swallow and certainly not worth it.

“Awful food, Rip-off”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed May 24, 2006

Visited 5/8/06
I wish I has seen the previous review before we went. We asked for menus and the waiter got offended that we did not want to just let him tell us what they had to offer. He had an assistant give us salad and bread before we had a chance to order. When I said I did not want the salad, he became very pushy. When the bill came, I found out why--we were charge $3.50 ea. for the bread and salads, which consisted only of wilted iceberg lettuce and two small slices of over-ripe tomato. The French onion soup was very salty--inedible; crab au gratin was lukewarm and tasteless. Food went downhill from there. Although the pecan and key lime pie were okay, the grocery store brand, Edward's, is better.

“Not worth it”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed April 26, 2006

It REALLY is NOT worth it; not worth the wait, not worth the $$$. First thing, - I do NOT like the fact that there are NO menus. What you get is a server that comes to your table and rattles off a 'menu' sooooo fast that you feel as if you are at an auction - you literally cannot understand what he is saying! Secondly, because of this - you just order what someone at your table or another table orders, because when you ask him to please repeat the menu because you could not get everything he said, (and he looks as if you've asked him to cut his foot off or something), he again begins rattling thru it as if at auction, - again!!! Third - the 2 salad dressing choices they offer, are not choices that one would think would be at a Steakhouse with these prices, (ranch and thousand island) I chose ranch but would rather have had a good vinagrette or gorganzola or blue cheese even. The ranch was terrible, like Kraft out of a squeeze bottle and the salad was mostly wilted lettuce. The steak was average - but nothing memorable and neither were the sides that came with it. The atmosphere is just like the name, 'barn-like'. For the prices we paid, I did get very 'sick to my stomach'. I definitely do NOT reccomend this restaurant, although many locals seem to LOVE it (???!). If you do visit this area - the VERY Best Restaurants are; #1) Cargo - in the downtown Historic area of Brunswick - Fabulous - if you can get a reservation, do NOT pass it up. #2) Latitudes - on Jekyll Island, in the Historic District on the water accross from the Club Hotel & #3) Georgia Sea Grill - St. Simons.

go early or be prepared to wait. in any event it's that good that you won't mind. ask for Terrance, he waited on us and was sharp, on his toes and took extra good care of us. the scallops are fresh, perfectly prepared and delivered with the hottest baked potato ever. the log on the fireplace was the size of my first appartment. this is a fun dining destination out fredrica road. bennie's red barn has been an island fixture known for it's delicious meals and excellent service since the 1950's. the steaks are the featured entre but don't let that keep you from ordering 'just came in the back door' seafood. no sooner had we sat down than we had an oil and vinegar salad set in front of us with piping hot fresh bread. it was the best meal we had had all week and that was after having sworn off whiskey for life after eating barbara jeans crabcakes. there is a dance club behind bennies where they were kicking up their heels that sounded like fun but we were too full to try. there is also a fish camp at the end of the road beside bennies of some renoun. this is the last restaurant left over from the old island days of 'the deck' out on the causeway. i have a feeling it will continue to thrive for a long long time too.
