“Ianother fort but this time with a difference”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 1, 2013

This is another fort built for protection in the civil war but this one is more interesting in the fact that in the park round it the old town is mapped out and there are descriptions of what it would have been like. When we went the visitor centre was closed and we just walked and didn't have to pay but if we had it would have been worth it. A beautiful place.

“Close your eyes and transport yourself back to 1742”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 30, 2013

Fort Frederica National Monument is a bargain for a trip to early coastal colonial civilization before we were America. Information and film provided by the National Park Service helps you imagine life in the "disputed lands" when British and Spanish interests conflicted along the coast. You can see where the village and fort were and remnants of each are there to help you spur your imagination. The scenery is beautiful as well, with moss draped trees and the Frederica River flowing along the edge of the site. The office area provides a gift shop and clean rest rooms as well as displays of historical note for the period. If you enjoy history of colonial and pre-revolution early "America" don't miss this attraction!

“Gorgeous dripping moss”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 28, 2013

The trees here are so dense with Spanish moss, that you just have to take a picture! The visitor center video is helpful for the brief history.

“Good Stop on the Island”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 28, 2013

We have been to the island many times over the last ten years, but never visited the Fort. Not large, but very interesting and a nice video. Avoid during deer fly season!!

“GREAT value!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 24, 2013

We visited Fort Frederica on St. Simons Island in Georgia. The cost was only $3/pp, so we didn't really expect much, boy were we surprised. The docent was very knowledgeable, not only about the history but about the archaeological process involved in preserving this important part of our history. If you are at all interested in history, you really should spend some time here. This small little fort actually changed the course of history and what our country was to become, they stopped the Spanish making further inroads north. We were there about 2 hours; but could have easily spent more time. There is a short 20 minute film with some background information, a short talk by the docent and then you are on your own to explore. There are placards describing what you are looking at and giving you some insight in what life was like living at the fort. I think even kids would enjoy an afternoon here.
