“Nice Surprise”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 16, 2008

With The Cloister charging $750 a night these days, the King and Prince looks that much better. Before arriving, I was told the hotel was a bit of a dump, badly in need of an update. After staying two nights here, I can say that, for the most part, the resort is certainly not a dump and does most things well.

Our large, clean room seemed newly renovated, with updated furnishings and clean tiling in the double sink bathroom. The room overall was a strong suit of the resort. The lobby area looks like it dates from the 1970s and needs to be renovated desperately. The pool area had a sufficient number of sun beds (the sun beds are old-style with plastic slats as opposed to cushioned loungers). There are two pools, neither of which is memorable in design but which serve their purpose well. Poolside service was prompt, courteous and reasonably priced.

The beach is a standard southern Atlantic, which means hard packed sand, warm, murky waters and no waves. Whether you are paying $750 at the Cloister or $250 at the King and Prince, you are on the same type of beach.

Being conveniently located near the St. Simons pier means it is just a quick drive to bars and restaurants.

This resort is a nice place for a long weekend.

Wanted a relaxing beach vacation with wife and teenages after school let out and before daughter had to go to summer college. Spent "hours" researching Saint Simon's and settled on The Beach Club (condo) manager by Hodnett Cooper Rentals. Fours days before departure, H-C Rentals calls my cell phone and informs me that the "owner" of the condo unit I had specifically pick out for amenities (and beach view) was going to use the unit and I had to move to a different one. Obviously the rental (deposit) commitment is "one-way". I searched internet again and made arrangements to stay at King & Prince and called The Beach Club and told them I choose to not do business with people who don't keep their commitments (especially since I had to let them charge the full amount to my credit card in advance). Got my credit card reimbursed and headed to King & Prince.

This is a GREAT place. Clean, updated, plenty of food and drink choices in their restaurant and poolside grill/bar. Rooms face the beach and security is excellent. My teenagers & wife loved the place. One morning my daughter and I walked the beach at sunrise and saw "The SSI Beach Club" condos from the shore. We definitely made the right choice with King & Prince.

  • Liked — Location, restaurant/bar, security, free wi-fi.
  • Disliked — Bathroom a little small in the unit we were in. Might be larger in suites.

My wife and I stayed in the Oleander Building over Memorial Day weekend 2008. The room was very nice. I would classify it as an upper scale hotel room. The furnishings were nicer than most hotels and the bathroom was outfitted with granite counter tops. The balcony we had was nice also.

The room was labeled as "Ocean View" which it was, however you had to look over one of the hotel drives and a small parking lot. It wasn't an eyesore, but I would have loved to see more of the ocean.

The price was too expensive in my opinion. The room and amenities were very nice, but not nice enough for the price we paid. Just my opinion - who knows maybe I'm cheap!

The beach was nice, there were a lot of people, but it wasn't overly crowded. The water is a bit murky due and the beach isn't a white sand beach but it's still really pretty. We did see a bunch interesting wildlife including jellyfish (non harmful cannonball jellies), sting rays, dolphins, sand-dollars, pelicans, herons and all sorts of shellfish. Personally I found it almost more interesting than the "prettier" beach we went to in Hawaii!

Overall it was a very nice experience. If I were to go again I'd go in the off season when the rates are cheaper.

  • Liked — Right on the ocean and excellent beach access.
  • Disliked — The price - too expensive!

Attended a business meeting here over 4 days. The hotel is right on the beach and at high tide the water is lapping at the sea wall. I had an ocean front room and hearing the waves at night was terrific. The food during the function was quite good. The breakfast buffet is extensive with wonderful offerings each morning.

There are several buildings within the hotel and finding your way around can be a little challenging. Hotel staff was very nice and grounds are lovely.

  • Liked — Really ocean front, right on top of the beach.
  • Disliked — Confusing hallways.

We wanted a relaxing beach getaway close to home where we could enjoy the warm gentle breeze and the sound of rolling waves. The King & Prince is only 1 1/2 hours away from Jacksonville, FL. When we arrived at the resort, our room was not ready (we were 5 hours early), so we changed into our bathing suits and sat by the beach-side pools and absorbed the sun's rays. The hotel had the old charm of the south. The grounds were beautiful, the lobby was subtle and the people were friendly. After lunch from the pool bar, we checked into our Cabana Room in the Historic Building. The room was ideal. We had french doors that opened up onto a private patio overlooking the ocean. The breeze came in from the water and filled the room with its salty bliss. The bed was lush and the furnishings were elegant. The only thing missing was a small fridge for storage of cool refreshments. The room was spotlessly clean as one would expect. We were so happy with the hotel that we opted to eat at the hotel's restaurant, The Blue Dolphin. We had Surf & Turf. The food was pricey, but delicious. The steak was no Ruth's Chris, but it was still tendor and had great flavor. All in all the hotel made our vacation exactly what we wanted it to be. Friendly staff, beautiful surroundings and a healthy portion of serenity made our "Baby Moon" vacation a success!

  • Liked — Our Room was the best highlight :)
  • Disliked — Check in is not until 4 pm, which is kind of late in the day.

The King and Prince is a great getaway from it all hotel. There is not too much going on at the hotel and in the town but that is why I love it. When you want to get away from it all just and spend alone time with your significant other... go here!

We always have a fantastic stay at this King and Prince. I'm sort of shocked at the negative reviews. We stayed in the ocean view, king room. Absolutely georgeous! We even had the door open (in Dec) and heard the waves crashing all night long. Very calming. We had a small hallway which led to the large bathroom. Very beautiful. The indoor pool was just the right temp for our 5 year old. The workout room had several upscale treadmills, one very nice ski machine, plus a huge HDTV to watch as you worked out. They have 2 clay tennis courts to use for no additional charge. The doorman always opened the door and greeted us with a smile. The buffet breakfast had a min of 30 selections, which included crepes. To us, the beach was beautiful. We love this place and will always choose to stay here.
