“Historic & comfortable. A great location!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 8, 2013

This was our first stay at the King & Prince, finding it via an internet search for something "on the beach" at St. Simons. Our room was #301 - one of the historic tower rooms on the 3rd floor with a princess balcony & another secondary corner window, which also has a direct view of the ocean. We loved this room with a comfortable, tall rice bed & little mini fridge to accommodate bringing your own snacks. The whole resort is so very relaxed & comfortable ( no unnecessary pretentiousness & fuss ) & the fact that it is a historic property, going back to the 30's/ 40's era made it even more interesting/ not your typical overpriced beachfront resort. We sipped frozen cocktails by the pool, enjoyed a delicious cheese tray, cooled off in the old style swings that are located right along the walkway of the beach. We slept with the sliding door open, to listen to the ocean all night as we slept. The breakfast buffet, with tables looking directly towards the ocean, was also a very nice experience. This resort was a terrific value, as they were offering a discount due to our booking for a Sunday night stay, but it seems to be a good value regardless. The location of this resort just can't be beat. We will definitely return.

Room Tip: Room 301 is fantastic.

I found the King and Prince while searching for a place where: a) the sun was shining (this was a challenge in early May this year) b) was right on the beach c) was fairly upscale but still reasonable (for me that would be <$300 a night).

We needed downtime this trip so that means contemplative walking, sunning, and reading and not into exploring the local history much. That fit St Simons pretty well and the King and Prince Hotel very well.

Our checkin was uneventful, the bell hop excellent and informative. We booked the Historic Tower Room as it was reported that these rooms, technically speaking, had the best view of the ocean since its on the 3rd floor. The room in the picture on their web site is Room 303 - our room. There are 3 Tower rooms: 301-303. Note that 301 and 303 have two window views: 302 is sandwiched in the middle with a single window towards the ocean. Also note that none of the Tower rooms have a useable balcony. They have an iron "step" balcony about 18" wide where you can step out and see things but no chairs. The only other issue with the historical room is that the bed has a very loud creak when you get up in the middle of the night - loud enough to wake my wife. This only occurred getting up or getting in not when rolling over. Otherwise we slept fine. The ocean right outside is soporific.

So if you are a roomie and want a room balcony next to the ocean, I would suggest the Ocean Front or Cabanas. The Ocean Fronts are on the 2nd floor and have a balcony with chairs, The Cabanas are on the first floor and also have a balcony and your own private front lawn that leads to the beach walkway. The walkway is a good feet away so its not like people are walking by your door.

The poolside common areas are great with chairs and umbrellas for free. Also the servers are ever present to provide whatever you like from their cafe menu. I was not happy with the beer selection - they need a few popular craft beers. A 410 would have been nice. I assume this is because they want things in a can not a bottle for safety reasons but a plastic cup would have been fine.

The service in the restaurant was OK - nothing memorable either good or bad. The food however was memorable. My wife is hard to fix for since she has to special order for low salt. The chef nailed it perfectly. That was memorable.

We will definitely be back. We did not get to explore the other buildings since we wanted as close to the ocean as possible but we thoroughly enjoyed our stay! Will recommend to friends.

P.S. If you are traveling in swing seasons and debating between Hilton Head and St Simons, check the weather. There was a 12 degree swing between these locations. It was a pleasant 79 yesterday in St Simons and a too-chilly 67 in Hilton Head. This has held true for the last 4 days. Certainly variable with seasons...

Room Tip: Historical room are very close to the ocean. Tower rooms are on the 3rd fl and have a great view but...

We were so lucky to get a special deal good only for the 2 nights we wanted to stay, which reduced the room price to about 1/3 in April. A grand old-styled lobby which we loved. Reception and all service staff were very helpful and cordial. Our beachfront room on the third floor had a balcony and a great view of the pool area, the ocean, and sunrise- magnificent. Food in the tavern for dinner and breakfast was good. Especially liked the lowcountry shrimp and grits. They surprised my husband with a slice of chocolate cake with "Happy Birthday" written on the plate when we casually mentioned that it was his birthday!
We loved this place and will try to return.

Room Tip: Beachfront on the third floor give a magnificent view of the ocean and sunrises.

Went for a meeting at the King and Prince and was able to secure group rate ($185) vs. the standard $400+/night. Very nice rooms. They have an ongoing renovation project that will make it even better. Customer service excellent, comparable to top line Marriotts. Food was also very good, although pricey. Several nearby restaurants within 5 minute walking distance (Crab Trap, CrabDaddys, etc) were all very good. Bike rental location 1/10 mile away. Island is perfect for biking. Lighthouse area on SSI very nice. A good place to escape for a week or a weekend.

Room Tip: Rooms near the pool pick up noise from the night. But when my balcony door was closed and A/C runnin...

When my wife and I arrived on the island, we went directly to a gathering of friends at the Beach Club at the Sea Island Cloisters to begin a long weekend with friends. That place is nice in an out-of-reach-for-normal-folks kind of way. We then headed for the K&P.

Arriving at the resort, it really looked a bit dated. We parked and entered the hotel lobby, which had the indoor-pool aroma of a 1970's Holiday Inn. There the negatives ended. We were greeted in a warm and friendly manner by the front desk clerk, and then upgraded on our rom as it was our first visit to the island. We enjoyed a cocktail poolside, and the service was fast and friendly. The view of the beach was great. Our room was nicely appointed, and the bed was exceedingly comfortable - very surprising considering that this is a historic hotel, which usually means small rooms and too-soft beds.

During our stay we played golf at the K&P course - a long way from the hotel at the north end of the island - and also sampled the breakfast buffet, which was fantastic. Overall, we had a very nice stay.

If you aren't in the jet-set class who fly onto the island and head straight for the Sea Island properties, then I would recommend the King & Prince as a lovely little getaway resort.

Room Tip: Get an ocean view room in the historic hotel. We had a "courtyard" view, which wasn't...

My husband and I have just returned from our first stay at the King and Prince Resort, and are already planning a return visit. The property hugs the beachfront with lots of nooks and crannies and choices of accommodation. Loved the historic stained glass windows, the outdoor pool pavilion, and being situated right on the beach. High marks to the staff who seemed very well trained and were full of smiling southern charm.

The lobby seemed a bit dated, (well it is an historic hotel) but we learned that there will be a big renovation this winter, so we're looking forward to seeing the changes. The food was excellent - loved the Shrimp Girts.

Had a great time on St. Simons - be sure to have breakfast one morning at the Seacastle - unbelievable breakfast buffet - DELICIOUS! Great trolly tour and went shrimping on the Lady Jane across the causeway in Brunswick - fascinating.

We spent a relaxed weekend there and enjoyed a lovely ocean view room. The beach is beautiful. The bed and furnishings were excellent and we were most comfortable. The weather was a bit cool for the pool but the loungers etc were very inviting. We had a nice drink and snack from the restaurant and found the breakfast buffet to be a great value. Thanks!
