“Stay in the Hampton House”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 2, 2013

It is nice, the service was very good! The house is surrounded by a low fence. It is an old property, that is very well maintained. The main pool is big with a kid area my boys love. Beds are nice, kitchen is modestly equipped. There are good restaurants within easy walking distance.

I have not stayed in hotel only the Hampton House for 3 summers!

Food: We cook a lot, and grill! They have a Starbuck on property. I have only had take-out and it was OK, not great. I had a shrimp po-boy a couple of times from the pool area bar. The best lunch bet is at the park next door or down the beach at a food truck called "the smoking pig" great people who use the profits to feed homeless and children in Brunswick. They have shaved ice, bbq, and fried shrimp. Good folks!!!

The Beach disappears at low tide and can get crowded during holiday weeks. But during mid-week summer it is yours. The waves during high tide are great. There is a sand bar that does create a dangerous distraction because of the undertow if you choose to swim out to it.

The house is very large two story 4 bedroom each room has a bath except for a kids room that shares a bath with another room.

Warning:
The sand bar is a long swim at points and the tides change and undertow kills. For us it is always tough swimming back in. While we were there the life guards assisted a couple of swimmer who were in undertow. Its can be bad, just beware that the swim is long, the water is deep and the current coming back can make it a challenge. If you are not confident with how to swim in undertow and potential strong currents be advised. Take a raft and life- jackets for little kids or average swimmers. Some times the current is calm, but often it changes.

I would not recommend taking kids to the sand bar BUT that is because I have personally been trapped in a "rip tide" at another beach and it can be scary. When the current gets a child they panic and it could be dangerous.

The Hampton House has a yard and a parking area. Great for kids!

Room Tip: Early church at Saint Simons Community is awesome and very casual.

The King and Prince has kept the charm of her origin and coupled great service with spectacular views, comfortable rooms, and southern hospitality for an outstanding get a way! Having frequented K & P in the 70's and 80's, I am pleased that the owners have kept the resort family friendly, but still an excellent place for my husband and I to rest and unwind after a busy season of work, family, and holidays. It was also tastefully decorated for the Christmas season, making it more special!

Room Tip: My husband and I had an oceanfront room with a balcony that was perfect for watching the sunrises an...

My sister and I have stayed in the historic building of the K&P on a number of occasions during the winter, each of us having our own room. This time, she had an ocean-front room, but I had a courtyard-facing room, which was twice the size of hers and very lovely. She had the view. In both cases, the rooms were well-furnished and clean. We received those prized pillow chocolates each night. Curiously, though, the maid staff was different each day and our rooms were not serviced until mid-afternoon---no big problem, just a fact.

As usual, the K&P had an enormous fresh tree decorated in the lobby of the historic building and other signs of the Christmas season (a red sleigh with wrapped gifts, the winners of a gingerbread house competition, and such). The problem is that the historic building is undergoing major renovation in its public areas that will continue until the end of February, when the spring/summer rates become effective. No longer does one check in at a counter in the lobby, but at a small cottage near the entrance to the property. Of course, there isn't anyone around in the lobby to ask a question. The main dining room is closed and guests eat in an expanded bar area. The business area with computers for guest use now consists of a table and chairs at the edge of the lobby with three computers and a printer on it. Jackhammers and other construction noises sound off during meals. There is no gift shop. It is disconcerting to be in a supposedly luxury resort with all the commotion and reduced convenience.

Room Tip: You have a choice , at least with regard to the historic building. Choose a view of the ocean and a...

The place could use updating - but the staff (especially Shannon at the front desk) is great and the views are incredible. The room was very clean - it just felt like 1975. The location is just wonderful. The floor (we were on the first floor) is not very soundproof - we could hear all walking and even some conversation from the room above us.

Room Tip: If you are beach side, get top floor - first floor hears every move up above.

We stayed there for 3 nights to attend a wedding. We were really excited, but I felt skeptical because of some of the reviews that said the place was worn. Prior to reserving our room in the Oceanfront Building, I spoke with the reservation staff and they recommended it because they said rooms in that building would be the most up-to-date. We reserved the room with two queen beds and I appreciate that they took our request for the top floor into consideration. The room had a great view, but it was above the pump for the swimming pool, so in addition to the ocean sounds we also heard the pump. The bathroom was the part of the room that bothered me the most. There was mold and mildew all around the shower, and the window and window sill by the tub needed a good cleaning. I felt very uncomfortable washing our kids in the tub/shower. The other disappointment came when I specifically asked the reservation staff whether our room would have a kurig coffee machine and he said that all the rooms had it. We were excited about being able to bring our own K-cups so we could make the coffee we wanted...we even bought creamer before arriving. Upon arriving, we noticed the room didn't have a kurig and when I called the front desk to ask, he said that they recently changed so we were misinformed. The couch in the room looked a bit worn with a stain, one of the beds needed to be replaced, had a big slouch in the middle. The flip lock in our room was broken. The service at the resort was good. At one point, our child accidentally locked the lock box with a new code and security was sent to the room in no time to reset the code. We had the breakfast buffet one morning, very impressive and affordable. It was free for our kids and for the adults it was only $14 per person. Not too bad. We forgot to put the kids' stuffed animals in our bags one day and noticed that they were missing when naptime arrived. I called the front desk and they promptly notified housekeeping. The housekeeper just said she didn't see anything so that was that. We looked all over the room again to make sure and still couldn't find them. So I went to the housekeeper again and she just kept saying she couldn't have taken them because she would have seen them when she replaced the sheets. I asked if she could look through the sheets and was happy that she did because as she was shaking the sheets out, the stuffed animals fell out. It was our fault that we didn't put them away but I'm glad the housekeeper was willing to look through the sheets. We knew others who reserved other rooms, and the cabana room looked very new...and the bathroom had no mildew. So if you are undecided on the rooms, my suggestion is to ask specifically and maybe compare rooms upon arrival. We also saw a couple of condos. We almost reserved at the Tabby house but was told that the housekeeper doesn't do the dishes and that we would have to put the kitchen back to normal. We didn't like that because that means the dishes in the cabinets would be left the way the previous guests left them, and what if they didn't clean them well? And also, other hotels we've stayed at would load and run the dishwasher each day. We saw the Hampton House and it was huge but not impressive in terms of being up-to-date. Overall, the resort seems a bit run down and could use some updating. The location was great though.

Room Tip: Many rooms looked outdated...compare rooms upon arrival to make sure you get what you asked for.

The overall beauty of St. Simon's Island is at its best in the winter. Weather in the 60s and the ocean seems cleaner and a deeper blue than in the summer. The cabana room has entrances both to the hotel and to the beach as well as a special sitting area to see each morning's sunrise over the Atlantic.

Room Tip: there are only seven cabana rooms so book early and ask for one.

We decided to go out of town for Christmas and saw a special with Groupon for the resort. It was horrible. The first day night we cooked, housekeeping didn't empty kitchen trash can which left an odor as well as overflow. The next evening, in the middle of the night, a drunk patron was beating on our door by mistake. As I was trying to figure out what was happening, and I turned on the lights, a roach crawled cross the kitchen floor. Needless to say, we ended up writing a list to specify that trash be taken out the next day. Perhaps if you use Groupon, you are given subpar accommodations and service across the board. Do not stay here. Jenkins
