Ringgold, a quaint little town, located in North Georgia, just 12 miles south of Chattanooga, TN. Ringgold is a Civil War buffs Gold Mine. Ringgold, established as a Township in 1847, was General Sherman's first town to burn on his march to the sea. The old stone Depot, which has recently been restored, was bombarded by cannon balls. You can see where the new stone was hurridly laid after the war to get the station back in service. Today, the Depot is the home of the Ringgold Opery. The Opery meets every Saturday night featuring Blue Grass music. One end features a Museum. The front lawn has three flag poles that fly the Confederate, Union, American and State of GA. flags. The walks located in front has engraved brick, listing the names of all the men from Catoosa County that fought in the Civil War. There are also stepping stones with the names of all the officers that led the forces in the Battle of the Gap. The lit at night Depot is a beautiful sight in it's self. Today, the Depot is used for live entertainment, weddings, dances, reunions etc. Ringgold is where the "General", the steam locomotive that Andrews and his Radiers were captured. Disney made a movie with Fess Parker about the incident, "The Great Locomotive Chase." A monument stands at the site of the capture. Ringgold is also where one of the fiercest battles took place, "The Battle of the Gap. Ringgold features a creekwalk along the Chickamauga Creek. the walk is lined with park benchs. On any given day you will see people wadding in the creek, picnicing, or just relaxing. The historic part of the town features many of the buildings that were standing when Ringgold was established is 1847, prior to the Civil War. The businesses consists of Antiques, candle shop, gifts, coffee shops, botiques etc. Located just 8 miles from Chickamauga National Park and Battlefield. Just 2 miles south is Old Stone Church. Now a musuem, the Old Church is where the Hymn "Leaning on The Everlashing Arms" was written. Ringgold is a good stopover or destination, with its many Resturants, Motels, and other sights. This is one destination you don't want to miss.
