As I write this review, TripAdvisor members have given Killeen House 440 5* reviews, and 23 4* reviews. All I can say is, 23 people must have been in a poor mood before they got there. This modest hotel is great.
I visited Killeen House on a golf junket with 3 friends. We rolled in after a long drive and a frustrating day. Before we had even gotten our luggage out of the van (and possibly before we had even unloaded ourselves), the front door opened and Geraldine and a couple of employees were outdoors to greet us, hollering hellos and offering us a hand. She got us registered in less than 5 minutes, we moved into our respective rooms (all comfortable and exactly as requested) and we reconvened in the cozy and inviting bar. There we met Michael and his friends, who were enjoying the evening and playing host. We were a bit too late for the dinner service, so Geraldine came to us with bar menus, took our orders, and came to fetch us when our supper was ready. The food here is very good. A highlight of our trip.
The reason we had a frustrating day was because after playing golf near Wexford (a long drive from Killarney) one of our contingent had his wallet stolen. (We know where it happened but I don't want to cast a shadow on it by going into details. One bad apple...) The wallet was actually a zippered case that had money, US driving license, credit cards, and... US passport. Yikes. So we showed up a bit stressed out. Whiskey was required, and whiskey was provided. We stayed 4 nights, and during our stay we were informed that the friend's wallet had been discovered near where it was lost, in Wexford, about 2 hours south of Dublin. Friend had already cancelled credit cards, cash was gone (of course) but drivers license and passport were still in it. Good Samaritan turned it in to the Wexford Garda station (police). Then, Geraldine the Rescuer came to our service. She got on the phone and rang everyone she knew who could help. Ultimately, over a period of about 24 hours, she mobilized her connections and was able to confirm exactly where my friend could pick up his lost items, at the Garda Headquarters in Dublin. Getting it sent form Wexford to Dublin saved us from shortening our trip, or having him extend his so he could go fetch his passport. I can promise you it took her a good deal of time, effort, and determination to move the bureaucracy to our service, and she did it with charm.
The rest of the house staff echoed Geraldine and Michael's spirit. They work 7 days a week during a 7 month season, and then collapse for the next few months. Stay there. Eat there. Enjoy their company. And count your blessings. Hospitality doesn't get better than this.
TIP: Of course we had special reasons for thinking kind thoughts about the Killeen Hotel, but everyone who stays there does, in what I can only hope is a less dramatic way. We arrived late and left early, and Geraldine and the kitchen were very accommodating, even when it involved people stretching their work day to feed us. These people work hard, and keep an amazingly pleasant Irish spirit. They share tips at the end of their season, and we added to the pool generously. Please don't forget to do the same when you visit there. They deserve it, and it keeps them smiling.
Tip them. Pay it forward and reward amazing service by good folk.

It was a pleasure to look after you during your golf trip and we're happy we played our part in rescuing the situation of the stolen wallet somewhat. It just makes our blood boil when we encounter situations like this, but thankfully over twenty two years in the Killeen House, we could count on one hand the number of times we've had guests experience this type of misfortune.
And as Geraldine always says, it's not the fact that you have problems that matters - it's how you solve them that really counts!
You guys certainly took on an ambitious trip! But you seemed to revel in it all, and we're delighted that you all had such a good time and hope you're all safely home and laden down with a multitude of happy Irish and golfing memories.
Now that you've discovered all about the delights of Southwest Ireland and it's World class golf courses, we hope we'll see you back with us here in the Killeen House at some future stage.
Thanks a million again for the great review Doug and best regards to the boys.
Michael & Geraldine
