I've checked out the best in San Fran and New York. I've been to Asia many times. In my opinion this is better Sichuan than any other I've tried outside of mainland China itself. But to experience it you must get the real Sichuan dishes. If you order the Americanized stuff it won't be any better than the average.
My recommendations are:
- Dry-fried Eggplant (I don't like eggplant usually. I love this stuff.)
- Fish with Sour Cabbage and Wild Pepper
- Braised Fish (actually, all of the fish dishes I've tried are fantastic.)
- Shan City Shrimp
- Hot and Numbing Crispy Beef
- Iron Plate Beef
The restaurant is kind of like going to a restaurant in China outside of the cities...the atmosphere isn't great, but the food is awesome. If you are looking for a rather authentic dish, try the Pickled Duck's Feet with Wild Pepper. It's a cold dish where the star is the texture of the flipper.
As for all the service comments, I don't get it. I've eaten there many times and have always had fine service. You have to flag them down from time to time if you need something, but they have _never_ been rude or unpleasant. They've always been friendly and kind, generally serving with a smile. But understand that this isn't a 'high-star' place where service is the star. If you are looking to have your ego stroked then go find some place run by a guy with a manicured beard that serves 'adventurous bistro cusine.'
But if you want real and delicious food, and you like to try different things, then this is your place.
