“Beautiful Horses, Wonderful People!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 30, 2011

Where do I start? We have been so many times, I cannot count them all! There are plenty of places to ride in the SE, but none that treat you like one of the family with horses that are so well cared for. The staff is second to none, the greatest! We have been plenty of times and always leave wanting more - and wishing we had time for "just one more ride"! What else could you ask for in a vacation?! Great place for kids or adults wanting time for themselves. Something for everyone. Food is unbelievably good, cooked fresh and always plenty for seconds! It's become "our" place to not only ride, but to find time to relax, enjoy the animals (there are a lot more than horses on the ranch!), and to just be together as a family. THANK YOU Southern Cross, for all you do! I know this family will be back many times.

This was mine and my daughters’ third trip to Southern Cross Ranch, and will not be the last! Since my immediate family discovered Southern Cross, some 8 years ago, we have shared the Ranch with our extended family members and now our friends - This trip we gathered a 15 member group of mothers and their 13 year old daughters. We all felt right at home from the moment we walked in the front door! The food, lodging and accommodations were very comfortable and the owners went out of their way to make sure we were all content. So nice to have three very hearty meals prepared and served in the dining room that overlooks the pasture full of happy, healthy horses. The kitchen crew even made a personalized cake for one daughter’s birthday. The girls had plenty to keep them occupied and took full advantage of some of the activities of the Ranch including bikes, foosball table, scrabble, swimming and two wonderful horse rides complete with very cordial and seasoned guides. Needless to say all were tired at the days end. As for the Moms, we seized the hot tub and cool pool after each ride and relished in the fact that we had delicious food prepared for us and that our children were having a great time! By chance our trip fell on the weekend of a Rodeo that included World Champion and National Champion bull, bronc and barrel riders! We love Southern Cross Ranch, for our family it is good, clean wholesome fun.

We decided to stay at a horse ranch mainly because our oldest daughter, aged 17, rides horses frequently, and we wanted to do something different on this vacation. We've done the Disney World trips, the Florida Keys and wanted something that wasn't going to have us dealing with crowds, lines, and a lot of commotion. Considering that my wife hasn't ridden horses in 40 years, and my other three children, ages 21, 14 and 13, and I have never done so, we wondered if we were making a mistake...

We had a blast. Southern Cross has approximately 230 horses on site, so there are horses for all levels of riders, including people like us who had no experience. The guides gear the rides to your level. Whether it be walking in pastures, or on trails, or trotting/cantering/galloping, they will customize your ride to your experience. With us it was great, because our group was our family! The guides and the barn managers were exceptional... friendly and informative, and always looking to please. You could really tell the care and concern they had for the horses. It was a blast seeing all the foals, and actually feeding an orphan foal by bottle!

The office staff was very helpful and always had a smile on their faces. There are 16 different rooms, all having their own character. They are decorated in a western motif that was warm and inviting. This is not a five star hotel, so don't expect perfection as one would expect from that type of hotel. Remember this is a working ranch. The ranch house rooms are very comfortable, relaxing, many of which have very beautiful and peaceful views.

The food was wonderful, served buffet style and straight from their own garden. All six of us couldn't believe how many times we said.. is this food excellent or what? And there is plenty of it.

My favorite part, besides learning that I really CAN ride horses, was the peacefulness of the ranch. The owner, Inga Wendling, has done a magnificent job creating a little oasis of country heaven. Whether it is walking the pasture at sunrise or sunset, fishing in the pond, or visiting the barn to pet or feed the horses carrots and apples, there was such a sense of relaxation that my family, to this point a NON horseback riding family, simply can't wait to return next year. Many thanks to Colter ( front desk and jack of all trades), Dave (asst barn manager- we absolutely loved hearing what he had to say about riding tips and the care of the horses), as well as Sandra ( our guide on a number of rides) for a vacation that we won't soon forget.

Room Tip: The Cattle Baron room is our recommendation

Had a great time. The ranch is conveniently located 1 hour outside of Atlanta, which worked for us since we were able to rent a car at the airport and get there with ease. The staff is great and helped us with our late arrival which was past midnight.

Since I am not an expert on horseback riding, I confine my comments to the following:

Staff: quite welcoming and helpful
Premises: beautiful with numerous recreation options including a pool, wonderful trails, and a great selection of movies and books
Food: Buffet options were different every day and delicious
Room: Comfortable and clean

Overall this place is a great option for anyone looking to relax and enjoy something different.

Well we just got home our fourth stay at Southern Cross. Just like our first time our fourth time was still magic. We go to ride as we are avid horse people riding every week at home. All the horses at the ranch are great, and that probably would be enough for us alone. But it sure don't stop there, the stable staff is great, the kitchen staff is great, the staff at the in is great, the owners are great. Oh did I mention the food….it’s great. The day we left to go home we both must have been hugged by ten different people each; the entire staff makes you feel part of the family. We go to ride and we sure do, about four to five hours a day, plus the all day trip to Hard Labor Creek State Park We go to ride, but I gotta say I can’t stop thinking about all the friends we made, and how much I miss them already.

Room Tip: We always stay in the Charleston!!

I visited Southern Cross thinking it was a typical Bed and Breakfast!! I was wrong. This is a destination in itself. A very friendly staff greets you upon arrival. They give you a complete tour of the grounds. There are 250 horses that are kept at the ranch. There is great horseback riding. They have mountain bikes to use to ride on trails. There are all kinds of games to play. The rooms are very spacious and well equipped. The food was wonderful and they offer breakfast, lunch and dinner. The ranch is just a few miles outside Madison, GA and they have wonderful shopping and resturants. The price was very reasonable also. Great place to stay for football weekends because it is just 30-40 minutes from Athens.

I loved this place. I wanted a solitary retreat for a few days and as a horse-lover, was delighted to find Southern Cross online and well-reviewed here on Trip Advisor. It was worth the 12-hour drive from Illinois! Wonderful people, sweet (well-cared-for) horses, and lots of fun and quiet time. Several new foals born recently and they were so wonderful to see! Unfortunately, it rained my entire stay, but we got out there and rode anyway, as long as it wasn't thundering & lightning. They are VERY careful about safety, which I liked very much. They limit rides to the pasture if the trails (and the Georgia clay) are too slippery. The 3 meals a day were unbelievable: good, hearty, home-cooking with enough variety for everyone's tastes, and served like clockwork at 8, 1, and 6. They don't serve or sell alcohol, but there's a fridge for guest use and I went into town and got some wine of my own. The room was fine -- bathroom probably needs a little updating -- but clean and comfortable, so what more do you really need? I would definitely come back to Southern Cross -- it's an absolutely amazing value and a perfect getaway for solo travelers, couples, and families!

Room Tip: Plantation Room overlooks back pasture; quiet
