“GHASTLY DINING ROOM”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed June 19, 2013

Went for a late Sunday lunch with my husband and son. The dining room is totally soulless and incredibly noisy as a result of the lack of soft furnishings and the hard floor. I don't know what they were thinking of decor-wise when the refurbed, but it definitely looks as though it hasn't been finished. It is so bare and lacking in character.

Service was ok, although perhaps a little over-familiar. Food was dreadful! Couldn't even eat my pork crackling a it was so hard and my son had a bowl of pasta that I could have prepared much better myself.

Won't be going back.

Stayed here for one night on business. Plenty of parking. Room very spacious and clean. Bed very comfy. Didn't dine here in the evening but the breakfast was excellent. Fresh produce and pleasant surroundings. Wouldn't hesitate to stay again.

We attended a wedding reception in a hall about half a mile from this hotel. Most of the guests stayed at the same place and had a great time. There was a great selection of beers in the bar to get the evening started, comfortable rooms to return to, and an excellent breakfast the next morning.

Stayed here for a night and it was lovely. The rooms are modern and clean, the bar is big and spacious with good outdoor space. The staff were super pleasant and friendly, and the breakfast in the morning was absolutely gorgeous. Would highly recommend.

Stayed for 2 nights as we were visiting family and friends locally. Bedrooms very corporate and disappointingly not traditional in keeping with the age of the hotel.

The plastic 'key' hold inside the bedroom door had its own light on permanently which unfortunately reflected in the full length mirror on the wall opposite, thus lighting up the bedroom throughout the night. If you need a dark room in which to sleep, this place isn't for you! Reception informed us that other people had complained about this but nothing could be done as all the bedrooms were similarly fitted.

For the sake of convenience, we invited the family to eat in the bar with us one evening. Considering the price of the food, we were expecting something special. Despite being fairly quiet at the time, the service was incredibly slow. When it arrived, it was very disappointing and the portions were small - one of the family returned home immediately after dinner and cooked himself a bacon sandwich, such was his hunger! The hotel seems to have pretensions of presenting fine dining/nouvelle cuisine and charging high prices accordingly when, in fact, it doesn't come close. 'Pub grub' at reasonable prices would be more honest, given the setting. Unfortunately, even the tasteless chips were like frozen oven chips, even though we were assured they weren't (and, yet again, people had complained about them in the past or so we were told). How difficult can it be to make chips actually taste of something? (Also, the price of drinks in the bar were very high - in accordance with similar Youngs' pubs).

On a positive note, the breakfast chef very kindly made up a delicious fresh fruit salad at our request (which wasn't on the menu) and the waiting staff were very friendly and helpful. However, the star of the show must be the lovely helpful receptionist (name forgotten - sorry!) who obviously loves her job and the hotel in general with much enthusiasm and was very keen to invite comments about our stay (ie those mentioned above). She's what you hope all front of staff to be like and, in our opinion, should be promoted and given a raise immediately!

Really want to love this place as we used to live in Wallington several years ago and it was always a favourite pub of ours back in the day ...

Room Tip: People drinking outside can get a little noisy so ask for a quiet room when booking.

Been past here loads of times and popped in last weekend to try the restaurant.

Really nice meal, chicken livers for starter, well presented, followed by a really nice pork belly with great crackling and good veg. Really good food, and not expensive.

Will definitely go here again

Have just spent 5 days and nights at this hotel. Would I go back? You bet!! Staff more than helpful, Brilliant room, very quiet even though it faced the front of the hotel and was on the ground floor. Large en-suite, plenty of fluffy towels, free-bees, a better coffee/tea tray than Premier Inns used to have. Bed is extremely comfortable with adequate pillows. The food is brilliant, all freshly cooked to order, vast portions, the size of the full English breakfast allieviates the need for lunch, the wine list is good quality, with the house wine being better than most. Evening meal is al a carte, and for a pub/hotel is very comprehensive; although not as cheap as other local places, the quality justifies both the charges and take-up by local people. My wife needed a cold pack to help relieve the pain in her back at 11pm and the manager got us enough ice to have some left to use in the morning! Service par excellance! Would recommend this hotel to anyone who needs a good nights rest in the area.
