We booked a multi-day stay at this hotel in order to flee from Hurricane Ivan in September 2004. We arrived late in the evening on Sunday, September 12, 2004. We dropped off our luggage after a long day on the road and went out to grab fast food nearby.
Upon returning to the room, we began to notice the condition of our surroundings. The Choice Hotels website touts this location as a "newly remodeled inn" with "deluxe guestrooms". If that's the case, we certainly didn't experience it.
First we noticed a dead bug on the vanity/ sink area. The finish on the sink and vanity was cracked and peeling. The whirlpool tub (which we were looking forward to using after a long day of hurricane evacuee traffic) was so disgusting, I wouldn't have felt comfortable using it after a gallon of Clorox. There were two very long dark hairs next to the jets in plain sight.
One of the reasons we chose this hotel was because we have a seven-month old and it advertised having microwaves and mini-fridges. We had hoped to store his formula in refrigeration and heat his baby food in our room rather than deal with restaurant feedings. The microwave had so much old, crusted-on food inside and out that we served our son his meals out of the jar at room temp. There was no way we were using that. And it's a good thing we had individual serving bottles of formula with us, because we placed bottled water and a 6-pack of Coca Cola in the mini-fridge upon our arrival, and they were only cool -- not cold -- the next morning.
Next this leads us to the most disgusting part of our visit -- the bed. We pulled back the sheets to find dirty sheets with what was either insect waste or dirt particles under the blankets. It was at this point when we called to complain. We chose to keep our room because we didn't imagine any of the other rooms being any better and we'd already decided that we were outta there first thing in the morning. (The 11 p.m. hurricane track was becoming much more favorable for our area, and there was no way we could stomach the thought of 3-4 more nights at this hotel.) Not to mention, the room we were in was the only room left with a king-bed not facing the Interstate. We were too tired to move all of our luggage and a very tired, fussy baby at that late hour. We did demand new sheets, however. When my husband brought them back to our room -- at midnight (yes, we had to put them on ourselves) not only had they given him full-size sheets for a king-size bed -- they were dirty as well. I had packed one queen size sheet from our house for our son to use during our trip to play with his toys. We unpacked that sheet and put it on our bed, and all three of us slept on that as a bottom sheet and wouldn't even use a top one.
As mentioned in another review, this hotel obviously relies on passing-through Interstate traffic for its business and the staff DO NOT care when you have a complaint. There was one person at the front desk ("AK") at check-out. When I noted my problems with the room -- and that we had already called with our issues the night before -- I was met with a "well what do you expect me to do about it" attitude in return. I was told he could not and would not discount the room rate. I was handed a business card with the general manager's name and number and told to call when I returned home if I wanted to discuss compensation. "AK" refused to get a manager, and claimed he was the only one on the premises -- when you could quite clearly hear others talking behind the desk area.
When "AK" realized I wasn't going anywhere and a business card was not going to send me out resigned to my fate, I was told to call 1-800-4-CHOICE. And I was so angry, I did so from the hotel parking lot. I filed a complaint with "Heather" at the national number at 10:51 a.m. that same morning. I'm told that it may take up to a week to resolve the issue -- so I'm still waiting. I am VERY disappointed that I was not offered an instant credit to my card, however, as I am a Guest Privileges member and prefer to stay at Comfort Suites and Comfort Inns with Suites whenever possible. All in all, this experience made a hurricane evacuation worse if that's even possible.
I would recommend everyone listen to the three "terrible" ratings left here and avoid the property at all costs. The reviews are as such for a reason, and the staff at this hotel do NOT care about making things right when they will inevitably go wrong during your stay there.
