We were on Tybee Island and decided to drive down to Jekyll Island for two days. We hadn't booked a room, but were planning on staying at the Quality Inn because of the Choice Privileges points....however, we were deceived into this hotel instead! We stopped at the visitors center on our way onto the island to get some more information about the area. We knew about about the turtles and thats why we were there. There was a really nice friendly lady sitting at a table to the right of the main counter. Before the lady at the counter had a chance to speak to us, this other lady came right up and asked if we had a place to stay. I was very leary she was a timeshare/condo salesperson so I explained we had planned to stay at the Quality Inn. She then went on to talk about this hotel and how great it was - newly remodeled, right on the beach, amazing views from the room balconies, great restaurant attached to the hotel, etc. Since we didn't know much about the area hotels and only knew the Quality wasn't on the oceanside, we decided to go with her suggestion. Even though she gave us a "discounted" rate and free breakfast, is wasn't worth the money spent! What a mistake!
This hotel is not on the water - its a huge walk down to the cliff and then down a whole lot of steps to actually get to the water...then when the tide comes in there is no beach, its all covered with water! Now, for the hotel itself. When we drove up, we saw the hotel looked pretty shabby from the backside and was a little scared about checking in. We walked in and the lobby was gorgous so we decided to stay, thinking if they put that much into the lobby, surely the rooms had to be as nice! WRONG!! OMG - was a huge disappointment! We were put in the 500 building on the bottom floor (there goes our nice balcony view!). The room was a gross disappointment! Wet, damp, moldy-smelling. The "furniture" is damp, dirty and scary! Then I went to use the bathroom - ugh...even worse! It is very tiny and there is no vent/fan. There was dirty towels folded up on the shelves, unwrapped soap, a 1/2 roll of tp and no extras. There was dark curlies in the shower and smooshed bugs on the floor and in the shower curtain. Gross! The front door was hard to open and shut and the lock barely worked. And the bottom of the door didn't meet the floor, so there was a good 1/2 inch gap between that left room for bugs and other crap to come in. The bedding is scary and very poor quality.
Just a huge overall disappointment!!! We loved the island and will be back next summer...but we will never stay at this hotel again!! Even the Days Inn looked nicer! I would not recommend this place to anyone!! I told the man at the checkout counter all the problems we encountered during one night and he had no response. I even took up the dirty towels - had no reply other than he'd have a word with the maids.
