My boyfriend and I checked in to a 2-bedroom "villa" on a Friday night for a two-night stay and the first thing we see when we go upstairs is a large live roach in the bathtub and another one scurrying under the bed. It also smelled weird and didn't seem very clean....especially the beds. We call the front desk and try to get another room but there wasn't one (but I had a feeling she was not being honest) so they called the maintenance guy instead. He was very condescending to me asking if I knew the difference between a palmetto bug and roach, which doesn't matter b/c they're the same thing, and then proceeded to spray the perimeter of each room at the request of my boyfriend who works in pest control.
After this, we check the beds/mattresses for any signs of bed bugs (again, my boyfriend works in pest control and this is standard protocol when we stay at a hotel) and we find the remnants of 2 bed bugs in one of the twin beds. So, we go directly to the front desk and my boyfriend proceeds to tell her what we found. There was no apology, only a quick scurrying of finding another room for us, which miraculously was now available. We were upgraded to a much nicer villa and there were no roaches or bed bugs....and we both breathed a sigh of relief.
On the 2nd night, we decide to try the onsite restaurant. We wait for 45 minutes for a table and notice that several tables have been cleared but no one is being seated. We overhear the hostess telling people that they're no longer seating people b/c the kitchen is overworked with to-go orders so I find out from the hostess (after asking her; no one let us know) that it'll be another 30 minutes before we get seated.....so we leave and go eat somewhere in St. Simon's Island.
On the day we check out, the front desk worker (manager?) is visibly stressed out and rude to us and to another gentleman wanting to rent a bike. She clearly doesn't belong in the hospitality industry.
Over all, I think this place has potential but with very bad management. If they spent some money updating the rooms with higher quality furniture and linens, de-bugged all of the rooms, and trained their staff in professional hospitality, they would have better success in happy clientele. The only thing it has going for it is the good location near the ocean but I would never stay there again....no matter what!!
Check the beds....including underneath the mattresses....for any signs of bed bugs!!

Thank you for sharing your experience from your recent visit to Villas by the Sea. I am terribly sorry for the inconveniences you encountered, which may have ruined your planned getaway. The apparent lack of staff professionalism when talking to our employees, I also find troubling. Admittedly, the recent intense rainfall has caused a minor spike in the palmetto bug sightings, but our pest control company provides regular service to minimize these issues.
