“Very pleasant and enjoyable place to stay on Jekyll”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 3, 2013

This was my first time to stay at Villas by the Sea. It was very enjoyable and the staff were friendly and accommodating. When we initially went into our condo unit we realized there was only a shower in this particular one. The front desk was very helpful in arranging to give us another unit that had a tub rather than just the shower. Each unit is different so what one has the other may not have which is something to be aware of if there is anything of concern for your accommodations. The pool was very nice though doesn't open until 10:00 am. There were a few days we wished it opened a bit earlier. The unit itself was nice and comfortable. I would recommend staying here and look forward to my next stay. It is right next to the beach and pier. Some closer than others depending on the unit you have but none of them are too far. Overall ery enjoyable.

We had a conference there and it was great - my room was neat and clean. They accommodated the needs of 250 people. I did go a couple of days before the conference and enjoyed the area. Went to the public beach and it was clean and quiet (but it was a weekday and kids have started back to school). Would definitely go back when I can.

I thought the villas were cozy, a little dated, but for the value...they were just perfect. Had playgrounds, friendly squirrels, pool--everything we needed to stay occupied. As the hotel states, at high tide you have no beach area. They were upfront about this. It was slightly disappointing to have only 4 hours of beach time. We rented bikes and went to public beach access for an all-day beach visit. Driftwood Beach is fun to visit, but bring your mosquito spray. We had a great time!

My boyfriend and I checked in to a 2-bedroom "villa" on a Friday night for a two-night stay and the first thing we see when we go upstairs is a large live roach in the bathtub and another one scurrying under the bed. It also smelled weird and didn't seem very clean....especially the beds. We call the front desk and try to get another room but there wasn't one (but I had a feeling she was not being honest) so they called the maintenance guy instead. He was very condescending to me asking if I knew the difference between a palmetto bug and roach, which doesn't matter b/c they're the same thing, and then proceeded to spray the perimeter of each room at the request of my boyfriend who works in pest control.

After this, we check the beds/mattresses for any signs of bed bugs (again, my boyfriend works in pest control and this is standard protocol when we stay at a hotel) and we find the remnants of 2 bed bugs in one of the twin beds. So, we go directly to the front desk and my boyfriend proceeds to tell her what we found. There was no apology, only a quick scurrying of finding another room for us, which miraculously was now available. We were upgraded to a much nicer villa and there were no roaches or bed bugs....and we both breathed a sigh of relief.

On the 2nd night, we decide to try the onsite restaurant. We wait for 45 minutes for a table and notice that several tables have been cleared but no one is being seated. We overhear the hostess telling people that they're no longer seating people b/c the kitchen is overworked with to-go orders so I find out from the hostess (after asking her; no one let us know) that it'll be another 30 minutes before we get seated.....so we leave and go eat somewhere in St. Simon's Island.

On the day we check out, the front desk worker (manager?) is visibly stressed out and rude to us and to another gentleman wanting to rent a bike. She clearly doesn't belong in the hospitality industry.

Over all, I think this place has potential but with very bad management. If they spent some money updating the rooms with higher quality furniture and linens, de-bugged all of the rooms, and trained their staff in professional hospitality, they would have better success in happy clientele. The only thing it has going for it is the good location near the ocean but I would never stay there again....no matter what!!

Room Tip: Check the beds....including underneath the mattresses....for any signs of bed bugs!!

Thank you for sharing your experience from your recent visit to Villas by the Sea. I am terribly sorry for the inconveniences you encountered, which may have ruined your planned getaway. The apparent lack of staff professionalism when talking to our employees, I also find troubling. Admittedly, the recent intense rainfall has caused a minor spike in the palmetto bug sightings, but our pest control company provides regular service to minimize these issues.
I will be speaking to the staff members involved in order to reinforce proper customer service procedures. I assure you, the experience you described is not typical of our operation.
Our restaurant is privately operated, but I will pass along your experience to the owner.
Comments from our guests are important to the successful operation of our resort and I thank you for taking the time to share your experience. I do hope that if your future travel plans call for a return visit to Jekyll Island that you will again consider Villas by the Sea for your lodging needs in order for us to display the type of hospitality we are capable of providing.
Sincerely,
Richard Coyle

Dated. Which we could have dealt with, all things being even but that was just the start. Too many problems to name so here are just a few. The pictures in the ad are so different from what you actually get that it false advertising. Dated, dirty, worn furniture, all types of bugs (dead and alive) in the condo, which was the second condo that we looked at as the first had furniture from the mid-80s that had seen better days. The one we finally stayed in had furniture from the early 90s so a tad bit better. It appears that the maids left a trash bag outside the curb, about ten feet from the door. It was there when we checked in around 7 and stayed there through the night where the raccoons and possums decided to have a party and throw the trash over someone's car. It took us over three hours to get ONE extra towel, which was delivered after we had been to the front office twice and finally just got one ourselves. The staff was pleasant enough but weren't really interested in your complaints. For the price I paid per night, it was ridiculous. If it weren't for the fact that it was going to be difficult getting everything and everybody along with the food we bought to cook back to someplace else, they would have never gotten my money. Never again! The property as well as Trip Advisor should be ashamed to award this place a Certificate of Excellence. It was anything but! One piece of advice, if you are going to charge people approximately $200 a night, you don't give them the $60 a night room!

For 2 couples traveling together this place really worked out well. Even though the furniture was a bit out of date, it was clean and a good value with a kitchen and 1.5 baths. It is very close to a beach access, and the parking is ample.

Our villa was very clean with beautiful views. Check in and out was a breeze. The front desk staff and cleaning crew were very friendly. The Driftwood Bistro is very good. The food is excellent and the service is great. I would highly recommend.
