“Neat loft rooms...get ready for the 'hike', and about average state park accommodations.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 19, 2011

We ended up at Unicoi for a night after the week of a pretty good snow for North GA. (Most other state parks were closed.) We chose the loft room, because we had 2 young boys 9 & 5) and thought they would enjoy the stay. The boys absolutely LOVED the loft...you have to go up a 10ft. metal (bolted to wall) ladder to get there! I had to "walk down" the ladder with our 5yr. old, concerned he might slip. There are only 2 mattresses on the floor and a flourescent light in the loft; so, don't expect a whole lot. The rooms are adequate and comfortable, pretty average for state park lodging...it seems state parks don't go "all out" in the cleaning department (and definitely no pampering here). However, we did have a pretty view of the woods with snow, cable, WiFi, and absolute privacy - because there wasn't hardly anyone there! We had breakfast in the lodge the next morning...not so great, but that's all there is, unless you want to check out early and drive back into Helen. It's a breakfast buffet, and we've eaten lunch there before; it's edible, but all 3 times, it just tasted like it's been reheated or sitting in the food heaters a little too long. They've got a neat little gift shop with local pottery and crafts. If you're in the area and need a place to sleep for the night, and know what to expect from most state parks, this is your spot.

I am a White County resident and my entire family and I have been coming to Unicoi Lodge for Thanksgiving dinner for 10 years now. In the past the food was OK but what was lacking in taste was made up for in the "atmosphere". From the round tables and white tableclothes and linen napkins to the Holiday decor and the beautiful buffet; those are the things that always made it special "in the past" for our family. NOT the case yesterday. We were placed at a table in what I would call a VERY informal dining area. In fact, it was where we would eat if we were to come here during the week and no special occasion. Which, we have done several times. When we were took to our table I thought to myself, " We had to make reservations for THIS??!" I was HIGHLY disappointed ; as was the rest of my family. The experience was at best, sad. We could have gotten the same atmospheric dining at Wendells, Ma Gooches or Glenda's and the food would have probably been better too! I will never plan our holiday reunions at Unicoi Lodge again!!!!!

Unicoi State Park and Lodge Management is very concerned with the experience Murray-mom expressed in the posting on TripAdvisor November 26, 2010 concerning their Thanksgiving Day meal here at Unicoi State Park and Lodge. We pride ourselves not only on our customer service, but, our Food and Beverage staff and the wonderful job they do with the Thanksgiving Day meal, especially for the amount of food that has to be prepared for over one thousand Guests served on this day every year. We received nothing but compliments on the food and the way the reservations were handled, giving our Guests a wonderful experience. We received only one complaint on Thanksgiving Day and we were able to accommodate the Guest concerns promptly. We can only get better when we know that we have not met a Guests expectation and having the opportunity to fulfill their needs.

Thank you for taking the time to review this response and our hopes are that Murray-mom contacts us to discuss the possibility of enjoying next years Thanksgiving Day at Unicoi State Park and Lodge.

1st of all I ma not giving this 4 stars!!!! It is getting 2 stars only because the rest of the food was decent. It will not let me give it less than 4 for some reason .We only ate at the Lodge we did not stay at the hotel..The lodge needs to clean their grease before frying chicken again..The chiken also had feathers sticking out of a wing on the buffet. "disgusting". Also if they want to be "known" for thier food it might be nice to learn how to actually fry good summer squash because the squash they served the prebreaded fried squash was rubbery with no taste.. The pies were good but the cobblers were "canned" meaning they just dumped canned pie filling in a pan and dough thrown over and baked. Also the banana pudding was from a can . At least the pudding was.. Take some time cooks and cook some real food if you would like a good review! . The scenery in Unicoi was unmatched. It was beautiful. And even though the Lodge is older it was very nice.

This lodge has seen better days. The structure appears tired, worn and dated. Visitors must cross highways to enjoy nature trails. Our tub stop draining at 6:00PM and we were told directly by the front desk that maintenance goes home at 5:00PM and there was nothing that could be done and check in is at 4:00. That is just an example of the mentality at the Unicoi Lodge. I don't think we will be returning.

We just had our family reunion at Unicoi this past weekend. After reading previous reviews I was a little nervous at what we might find. I was very pleasantly surprised! We stayed in the B barrel cabin, and while it was older, and very campy feeling, it was also very clean and comfortable. Definitely no rodent droppings or dead squirrels-I checked! Other family members stayed in these cabins, and each one we were in was very nice.

I was quite impressed by the Smith Creek cottages. They were newly renovated, and each one was lovely! We took up most of the camp with our family!

You couldn't beat the surroundings. It was gorgeous. Smith Creek runs right next to the cottages, and was fun to go wading in with the kids. Anna Ruby Falls was beautiful and worth the trip up the mountain. Helen was quaint and fun, and only a couple of miles away. Great resteraunts (try Nacochee Grill on the way other side of town and the Old Heidelburg right in town, as well asHofers). We also went tubing down the river, which was fun, but would have been more fun if we were either a smaller group or all strapped together. All in all...I highly recommend this location! We will go back for sure.

I believe this is owned by the state of GA but I could be wrong. It was clean, but a little outdated. If you don't mind the rustic look of a lodge, then this is for you. Close to Helen, Ga, and has to be nicer than the dumps on the strip in downtown.

My husband had gone to Unicoi with his family as a young boy many times whilst growing up and has many fond memories of staying in the cabins. We were looking for somewhere to go for Thanksgiving 2008 and decided to Unicoi. We spent the first 2 nights in the lodge as the cabins where booked up. We then moved to a cabin for the last 2 nights. The lodge room was clean and comfy but a little cramped as we had a small baby and a toddler. We were glad to move to the Barrel cabin for the latter part of our stay. We had a 2 bedroom barrel cabin and loved it. The kitchens looked like they had been recently redone and everything was clean. The fire place in the living room was perfect to sit around on a night after the kids had gone to bed. One tip I will give though is buy the duraflame logs to get your fire started. The GA wood they sell is not very dry and takes forever to get burning. We enjoyed our stay so much that in 2009 we went back again for Thanksgiving and stayed in the Smith Creek Cabins. Again our experience was positive. The cabin was clean, had a fire place, dishware etc. My only negative comment would be that yes there was a mouse in the cabin. I saw him scuttle across the floor on our second night and he nibbled his way into my sons cereal packet. After that I stashed all our food either in the fridge or in our cool box. Having grown up surrounded by farm land a little mouse didn't bother me too much, just might bring a trap with me next time!!! Food wise the lodge is great value the buffets are around $10 or $11 per person. And have a great selection of both entree's and deserts. We are booked to be back in 2010 and can't wait.
