“Nice inn near Okefenokee, but very awkward interaction with owner”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed January 10, 2013 via mobile

We stopped here on our drive north from Florida, and to check out Okefenokee. We had booked two nights here, had a calm, quiet first night and a decent breakfast (omelet, toast, fruit, and bacon). We had generally pleasant interactions with the owner, who seems to know the area well, and gave us good advice about meals and boating tours of Okefenokee.

The stay became awkward when we returned the afternoon of our second day there. The owner approached me and said, "What did you get on the sheets?" I said, "What??", and she repeated the question. I asked her to clarify, and she said that she had found "brown spots" all over the sheets, and thought that we had gotten "baby poo" all over the sheets. We are travelling with our 2 year old, but she slept in her travel crib and we certainly didn't change her diaper on the bed. Both I and my husband were certain there had been no stains on the sheets when we left for our boat trip that morning. I had to repeatedly tell her that I honestly did not know what she was talking about, and even then she didn't seem to believe me (and didn't apologize for the strange accusation).

The whole interaction left such a bad taste in my mouth that we ended up checking out a day early, and moving on to Savannah that same night. We were willing to pay the whole cost for two nights, since that's what I booked, but it would have been nice had the owner offered to discount part of the second day, given the reason for our early departure.

My husband and I spent three nights in the English Garden Room and loved it. The room is gigantic with a king bed, sitting area, jacuzzi tub for two, shower, etc. and spotlessly clean. We could hear the popular trains from a distance - a soothing sound. The den and large porch are comfortable areas in which to relax. The Inn is walking distance to the delightful little shopping area downtown. Janis cooked delicious breakfasts each morning and went out of her way to help us in every way. Highly recommended!

My wife and I stayed in the Lighthouse Room for 2 nights in March 2012. Even though Janis was still recovering from a bad bout of ill health she made us feel so welcome. A lovely lady.

The room itself was spacious, clean with a small verandah containing some easy sofas / chairs enclosed by mesh leading off. We sat there each night in relaxed comfort. Bathroom and shower were clean and more than large enough for us. The breakfasts were enormous and beautifully prepared and presented by 2 local girls.

All in all this was a great decision to stay here. Folkston was very convenient for our trip out to the Okefenoke Swamp which you mustn't miss. Local restuarants were, though, very limited in availability and quality in the evening. In fact on the Sunday they were all shut and we had to drive into nearby Florida! But the local Thai was very good on the Saturday evening.

We are not "train spotters" but couldn't resist waiting for the great long trains running on the tracks in Folkston and, yes, the train whistles do blow all day and night but we got used to them and didn't lose any sleep!!

This was our second stay at the Inn at Folkston. (We previously stayed in 2007.) We reserved the Family Room - plenty of space for 3 adults & one preschooler. (We brought an inflatable bed for our son to sleep on the floor.) Janis is a fun and helpful host. We felt completely at home. We enjoyed our breakfasts including those wonderful pancakes. We were in Folkston to watch trains and visit the Okefenokee Swamp so this location was perfect! If you need a place to stay in Folkston, I strongly urge you to consider staying at this property.

Janis and Bill are great hosts. Very kind. Very helpful. The Inn is beautiful, clean, beds are very comfortable, overall I would say, perfect.
I warn you, Janis will fix you a delicious breakfast. Eggs Benedict on our first morning, blueberry pancakes on our second. Not low calorie, but irresistible.
The inn is seven miles from the Okefenokee Swamp. We visited both days. Loved the swamp, loved the Inn. Can't recommend it highly enough.

Being railroad fans we chose to stay here because of the proximity to the 'Folkston Funnel' railroad viewing facility. The hospitality was excellent as well as the breakfast which, if you manage to eat it all, will keep you going for the rest of the day! The current owner is obviously a rail fan too because the house has a railroad theme throughout. If you don't happen to be a railroad fan, then I would recommend earplugs, as you will hear the train whistles all through the night! The only other slight negative for us was that there is not much else to do in the town of Folkston, and if you like a drink at the end of the day, be aware that Charlton is a dry county!
