When you visit Ntounias, take your time as we will produce to you to taste our plates, which are different every day. “Perhaps the best experience of our entire trip”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 8, 2013

This really was an amazing evening. After a beautiful drive through the mountains (where we saw a goat in an actual tree!) we came across what looked like someone's home apart from the tables and chairs in a raised arena across the road. The owners came out and invited us into their kitchen to show us the dishes they had made that evening (there were 6 or 7 traditional pots of food). We asked for a little bit of everything, and one by one we were served meze-sized portions of food - all made from organic ingredients grown in their garden or locally. Among others, these included stuffed courgette flowers (these were on a different planet to the ones served in the tourist tavernas), a dish of aubergine in a thick cheese sauce and wild boar ribs. All were phenomenal. The owner also brought us some of his wine, made with grapes he had grown, which was like nothing I'd ever tasted before; I only wish I'd asked if he would sell me a bottle.

To match the food, there is the mountain view, the sense of peace and the cool evening air as the sun slowly sets. This experience is really what travel was made for. We agreed it's almost worth returning to crete just to go back to Dounias!

We were charged a total of 25 euros for about 6 courses.

Also my engineer boyfriend is making me add that the wiring job for the electrics was one of the best we'd seen in crete -.-

We arrived late in the night at Drakona village. The hospitality offered by Stelios and his whole family is amazing. The food was homemade quality and at a very friendly price. Place epitomizes what hospitality and professionalism. Thank you for a wonderful night!

“This is the taste and experience of the original traditional Crete!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 3, 2013

Having visited this Taverner a number of times we never fail to have a fabulous meal in beautiful surroundings with superb hosts,

Stelios never fails to entertain, and his family are part of the whole experience. Tucked away on the quiet mountain roads between Theriso and Malaxa it is a little oasis of tranquility and the traditional Crete that is danger of disappearing with the growth of "all inclusive".

On arrival you are greeted as if you are family, then the customary trip into the kitchen to view what is on offer. The smells of the various dishes waft to tantalise your taste buds. Each lid is lifted from the traditional ceramic pots to reveal another gem of Cretan cuisine. All dishes cooked on wood stoves and the bread freshly baked in the wood oven next to the wood stoves.

You don't choose from the menu but trust your hosts to deliver a vast variety of small plates of these tasty dishes. This is washed down with his own delicious white of red wine or if you wish now you can have a traditional Greek beer. No Coca Cola here only locally made deliciously sweet soft drinks.

You don't just have a meal here it is a total experience, the wide range of dishes cater for both vegetarians and meat eaters. Don't expect fish this is not the seaside! Only fresh meats and vegetables that are in season are served here so the menu is never quite the same.

If you are fed up with Moussaka and Greek salad and want to try what the Cretans eat this is the place for you,

A bit of advice, if you can ring and book just to tell them you are coming. Sundays is always busy with the locals. Also when its gone its gone, nothing is reheated the next day.

Go for it!
