The best crab cakes this side of Virginia!!! This place is a real treat - a real find.
As a New Orleans native, I have a pretty discriminating palate for cajun food. If you've ever cooked cajun food, it's "easy to make, and even easier to screw up". That being said, cajun restaurants are about a 50/50 proposition, with only half of them actually getting it right.
We were in Big Canoe visiting family over Thanksgiving, we hit the Cajun Depot for lunch, as my dad has been a number of times, and has always gotten great service and delicious food. It did not disappoint, on this trip, either.
I had the Jambalaya with hot Andouille. The rice was moist and flavorful, and the andouille juicy and spicy. I actually found myself not needing the Tabasco sauce. (Although I still used it, out of habit)
The seafood gumbo had a thick, dark rue, and a mixture of shrimp and crawfish. There were a handful of okra bits, which is the mark of a cajun restaurant that moves in the right direction.
The crab cakes are very interesting, in a good way. Rumor has it, the owner's wife is from Maryland, so she's taken her "up-north" crab cake recipe and mixed it with cajun flavor, by blackening the cake and drizzling with remoulade. They were delicious!
The service was teriffic and the portions were on the bigger-side. I'd highly recommend this cute little spot to anyone looking for a diamond in the North Georgia rough.
fresh authentic cajun delicacies prepared as they would on st charles ave in nawlins. don't look for emeril here as this food is better! the andoule sausage is spicy hot and the shrimp are dockside fresh as are the oysters. Po Boys rule!!!!! the chicken sandwich is world class and the beer always icy cold and ready to put out the heat from a red pepper shaker found on every table. this track side little jewel of a restaurtant is a closely guarded secret of those in the know. we go there often and have never been disappointed. we never know what we'll see out front either. sometimes there are a fleet of mercedes and other times a flock of harley riders will have descended upon the place. all are careful not to park on the still used railroad tracks just off the front door. the building is a nicely redone brick railroad warehouse at least 100 years old. but it's clean and modern inside now with all the trappings of a french quarter bistro in the north georgia mountains. THIS PLACE IS FABULOUS TO EAT LUNCH OR SUPPER!
