“Just Say No. 246 Lunch!”
So, we make the pilgrimage to Downtown Decatur to the famed No. 246. What a disappointment. From the argumentative preoccupied waiter who was having a bad day from word one to meal timings to the mediocre tastes…I’m not sure any one of us will bother going back. Some of us requested sweet tea as a beverage and the waiter snipped immediately…”Only un-sweet.” Then when he brought he tea he put a couple of miniature cream pitchers with simple syrup on the table saying, “That’s it. If you want more we’ll have to make it.” Really? Then while taking the order, someone happily interrupted him and you would have thought he broke a nail! The apps we pretty OK and arrived quickly…but the late arriving entrees were what I love to call “The Bland and The Beautiful.” No. 246 has fallen victim to the hype of “Chef’s Artistic Vision of the Plate” while totally forgetting to make the food tasty for heaven’s sake. The Pastas dishes were boring and one was somewhat undercooked. The Flounder Sandwich was served with overcooked fries. The Porchetta Sandwich was OK but nothing special (other than the bea-uuu-tiful plate presentation). The Side of Greens overly salty. Yuk. And the No. 246 Burger – which was ordered ala on the side toppings should have been fat and juicy and inspired but was a grey Mickey D’s looking flat piece of meat literally torn in half and laying on a small puffy bum - No kidding. (Did they fry up the two small ends of a tube of meat? Where’s The Beef Dudes?) Oh and the waiter forgot the side of crispy onions. Damn! Needless to say, these folks have forgotten why foodie people come to a hip trendy Decatur restaurant. It is NOT the plate techniques. It is for the food taste fools! Somebody told me afterwards that dinner service and food was good. But many places only get one-shot lunch with all that lack of parking in Decatur. BTW- I noticed our waiter gleefully snapping pictures with an iphone of some pasta creations back beside in the kitchen with a small group of cooks experimenting on a dinnertime dish. Get your heads out of the next service and take care of your reputation and quality at during the service at hand. Sorry, but I call 'em as I experience 'em. Pretty plates of ordinary tastes. No. 246 was below average, a wasted late lunch meal, and a bummer experience.
