“Great Vacation with the Kids”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 21, 2007

Just returned from North Georgia on a mini-vacation with the kids. The Lodge at Amicalola Falls is a wonderful place to stay. This state park in Georgia is truly spectacular. Unbelievable views from our lodge room. Room was reasonably priced, clean and very nice. The food at the Lodge restaraunt was extremely good too. Amicalola Falls is awsome. Hike up the mountiain the hard way or park at the top & simply walk over! Our 9 year old and even our hard to please 15 year old had a blast. This park is also the beginning (or ending) of the Appalachian Trail. The park is close to many things to see & do with the kids. See my review on Dahlonega, Georgia. I highly recommend this area for a mini vacation with the kids.

We picked this hotel because Fodors gave it a top pick award. We were not disappointed. There were 6 of us in a suite with a loft. The loft had a ladder, so the seniors in the party could not climb up, however the teens loved it. The view from the 2 huge windows was breath-taking. The room was clean and tidy, but not exciting. The beds were fine, but stay there for the views. Breakfast was ok, nothing special, but for $7 the next closest place to eat is at least 10 miles away so this was fine. We would stay there again and recomend the place to anyone wishing to see the foothills of Georgia. Oh, the dinner buffet was much better than the breakfast and it was only $10 each. All in all a good value.

After reading other reviews of the lodge rooms, we booked a stay in the Hawthorn Suite. We kept asking everyone how old this place was, because it feels like its been around since the '50's. We were told it was built about 14 years ago. If so, they either built cheap or haven't maintained the property. The suite was musty and old feeling. There is no shower, only a very narrow Jacuzzi tub. We wondered about the waste baskets in front of the bedroom and bathroom doors, but when we moved them we found out that they were there to keep the doors from closing by themselves. The dining room was very dirty. Our chairs had an accumulation of crumbs and food in the seams around the cushions. The food was very good and the views are spectacular, but if you go for a good night's rest in a clean place, prepare to be disappointed.

Three of us ladies spent this past Friday evening - Sunday afternoon at this beautifully located lodge. The room was wonderful, as was the food (all meals served buffet style). The Saturday night prime rib buffet was really outstanding! The staff is super helpful and friendly. We had a suite with a patio, 2 rocking chairs, and the most spectacular view of the mountains, sunset, etc. Highly recommend this great get-a-way!

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
High in the North Georgia Mountains is Amicalola Falls State Park home of Amicalola Falls Lodge. Named after the Cherokee word for “tumbling waters” Amicalola Falls is one of the most popular state parks in Georgia. The park’s namesake is the 729-foot falls: the highest cascading waterfall east of the Mississippi River. The park is also the start of the 8-mile approach trail to Springer Mountain, the southern end of the 2,150-mile Appalachian Trail. The Lodge was built in 1990 by the State of Georgia, with 56 guestrooms in the main lodge and 14 cabins along with a gift shop, meeting space and a mountain view restaurant. The lodge rooms vary from standard hotel rooms with 2 double beds, loft suites that can sleep 6, to king bed suites with private balconies. The Lodge also is home to The Maple Restaurant that offers breakfast, lunch and dinner daily. The Lodge rests on 829 acres with on-site activities that include stream or pond fishing, as well as more than twelve miles of hiking trails, several centering on viewing the spectacular 729-foot waterfall. Amicalola Falls Lodge features more than 4,000 square feet of meeting space that can host groups and social events consisting of up to 150 people in traditional meeting spaces as well as a unique outdoor veranda setting. The Lodge’s spectacular view, peaceful setting, and exceptional service make it a destination not to be missed while in the North Georgia Mountains. ... more   less
