“Fun Getaway”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 30, 2013

This place is such a fun and unique getaway. Not quite a hotel, not quite camping. The hike there was lovely and it was more enjoyable to hike without having to carry all of our food and tents, as we would if we were camping. The family-style meals are perhaps not ideal if you are an introvert or there for a romantic getaway for two, but it does mean you get to meet the other guests and potentially provide some interesting conversation.
The rooms are simple and rustic with twin bunks. Being there in the winter, the highlights were probably the opportunity to go hiking and spend a weekend outdoors on a clear, cold day, but with hot coco and a hot shower at the end of the day instead of huddling for warmth in a tent. Would definitely recommend this for a weekend getaway!

The hike to the lodge is gorgeous. Several scenic vistas, varied and beautiful flowers and vegetation along the way. You cross several small creeks - love the sound of water in the mountains. And then the view when you arrive at the inn is also very beautiful. It is a quiet rest spot in the nature, except for ... see below.

The food at the inn is not fancy, but it is very very good and very plentiful. Enjoyed meeting the other guests there.

Everything is very clean. I knew the rooms were going to be small and bunk beds. But the rooms were even smaller than I imagined. And you have to make and then strip your own beds -- not that big a deal, just be aware of that in advance -- we were not.

We happened to be there at the same time as a group of middle schoolers, who were up late and loud, and then up early and loud. The staff could have done a better job of assigning rooms so as to have the school group at one end by themselves.

I highly recommend Hike Inn as long as there is not a middle school group there at the time of your stay.

This was a unique experience, we have hiked up to MT. Leconte in Tennessee for the past 7 years in a row and this place is very similar, great views and very caring people who run the place. The meals were excellent and the peace and quiet is great. We enjoyed the tour of the place and the evening presentation and just about everything else about this place. The Hilton this is not but what you get is so much more...solitude and simplicity on a grand scale. Would do this again for sure.

My coworkers & I decided to try the hike inn based on another coworker's experience. I walk a paved trail on a daily basis, but hiking with a pack is a little bit different. The view from different points on the trail were absolutely beautiful& many cool breezes to cheer you on! The rooms were adequate, the food was great , & they make you a little more "green" in your thinking about the environment . All in all a very good trip.

My husband and I go up to the Hike Inn every few months. I love the hike up the mountain, and if you want, you can take the Appalachian Approach Trail instead of the Hike Inn trail. We like to take the approach trail up and the Hike Inn trail down. I love the food at dinner and breakfast. I don't eat meat and sometimes we forget to tell them, but there is always more than enough to eat. The walls are thin in the bunk rooms, but the beds and blankets are comfy and clean. The staff is very friendly. We don't like kids so usually plan our stays for a Sunday night so that the children are (hopefully) at home and not out and about. I recommend this for a fun get-away that includes exercise, delicious food, and some quiet time.

Room Tip: These are "bunk rooms" not regular rooms. It is rustic and does not have electrical outlet...

It's an absolutely perfect place, assuming you understand that it's not Days Inn or its ilk. You have to hike five (easy) miles on well groomed trails to get there. You sleep in a bunk bed, though in your private room, and the restrooms and showers are in a separate building connected by a covered walkway. Food is served family style in the dining room. Don't miss sunrise from the sunrise room, and take the tour of the facility and its various conservation equipment offered at 5:00 p.m. every day.

The Hike Inn is an enjoyable and unique experience, with very friendly staff and good food. However, folks planning to go should be aware of a few things. First, it is not an easy hike, so be prepared. there is a lot of both up and down on a relatively rough trail. Rain, which we encountered on this trip, makes it harder. Second, the rooms are very spartan - on a par, i hate to say, with a prison cell. The rooms are tiny with a single light bulb, no other outlets and two bunk beds. There is a vast difference in the sleeping temperature between the two bed - the lower bunk is cold and the upper is hot. The bath house with toilets and showers is separate. The Inn uses a composting system. thus for some reason there is a strong blast of usually cold air blowing up through the toilets - a bit of a surprise for the first time user. There are three indoor general use areas - the lobby, dining room and game room. On our trip the game room was fully occupied, so we used the dining room for overflow recreation. There really is only one trail in and out - so hiking opportunities are limited. thus there may not be a great deal to do if staying more than one day (other than relax).

Room Tip: Use the Hike Inn trail on the way in. For variety, when leaving, take the 1 mile trail to the Appal...
