“What a wonderful experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 9, 2012

Recently my wife an opportunity to go to the Blue Heron inn. I had purchased a package through Living Social. Based on the info furnished this sounded like a wonderful getaway. Upon talking to Jan ( one of the owners) I felt very welcome and looked forward to meeting her. Upon our arrival we were rreeted by Jan, Bill and Nancy. Immediately we felt like we were visiting old friends. The pictures online did not do this property justice. The house is very homey with coastal decorations. Our room (Shell Room) was very neat and roomy with the quaint feeling of going back in time. Outside our room on the patio were all sort of beautiful flowers, plants, pineapple plants (with real pineapple growing on them). The view was breath taking, you could see miles of coastal marsh, water canals and all sorts of birds (both large and small). This location is very near the ferry that goes over to Sapelo Island. A trip to Sapelo Island is a must if you are in this area, it takes you back to a time with out all of the modern conveniences. It was cool and rainy the day we went to Sapelo Island, upon our return to the Inn we were met with a cosy fire in the fire place. And guess what? It was cocktail hour and Bill had beer and wine waiting for us. This location offers kayaking, bird watching and a wonderful place to just walk and enjoy nature. We were not able to kayak due to the weather but we left with an invitation to return and claim our kayak trip. Our two night stay was too short. Oh, I almost forgot the best part, BREAKFAST! It was like being in a five star restaurant. The dishes were not only beautiful ( in presentation) but delicious. Mama sure didn't cook like that! On the morning of our departure we felt as if we were leaving family.

Room Tip: There are no bad rooms. All offer great themes and make you feel like you want to stay forever.

Congenial hosts Bill and Jan Chmberlain provide comfortable accomodations in a beautiful setting. The Savannah Room has a very small bath, apparently a former closet, but is otherwise roomy. The lack of a closet was not a drawback for my one-night stay. The room opens onto a large deck, shared by several other rooms, directly on the beautiful marsh. Breakfast was delicious, served in ample time to make the Sapelo Island ferry, only 5 minutes away.

Room Tip: Savannah Room fine for one person.

Looking for a special place to unwind, breathe deeply, and just let go? Then, The Blue Heron Inn in quiet Darien, Georgia may be what the doctor ordered. Driving north through Jacksonville and Brunswick in the late afternoon, it was clear to see why this area is called "The Golden Isles". With the sun streaming through the grasses and reeds, it seemed as if a magical spell was cast over the expansive marshy vistas. We arrived at the Inn a bit before sunset, and were warmly greeted by our hosts, Jan and Bill. After a quick tour and receiving some info about the local restaurants, we took a short ride back into Darien for a spectacular sunset harbor view and fried shrimp dinner at Skipper's. Fresh off the boats and washed down with a top shelf margarita, this simple dinner was soul satisfying and fun!
Returning to the Inn after dark, we made our way through the house and into the blackness of the night near the marsh, where the weekly Saturday night bonfire was in full blaze. We were invited into the cozy fold by Jan, Bill and their visiting daughter, as well as other Inn guests and some friendly neighbors (Hi, Mary and Mark!). We spent the next few hours enjoying the stupendous stars, the cool coastal air, hot and toasty fire, ice-cold beer, and the really amazing company of perfect strangers. A very special time in an equally special place.
The next few days were spent enjoying delectable home-made breakfasts, gorgeous views from the second floor balcony, bird watching, bike riding, and yes, another trip to Skipper's for more of that amazing shrimp.
The care and quality of service that Jan and Bill bring to each guest is heart-warming and sincere. My friend and I felt special and happy, and the memories of our little golden getaway will always make me smile. :D

Our family stayed in the Cottonfield Farmhouse over Thanksgiving week. We loved the vintage decor, comfort, and coziness of this unique place. It was nippy, so we couldn't take advantage of the huge screened porch with the porch swing, but we'll come back again to enjoy that, as well as the canoes on the property. Instead, we bundled up and took our hot chocolate out on the back deck to stargaze. During daylight, we could enjoy watching the tides change in Hudson Creek, which is right off the back deck. It was a fun surprise to collect farm fresh eggs from the chicken coop, too! We had plenty to do nearby each day, including biking Darien; visiting Ft. King George; Harris Neck Wildlife Refuge; and Sapelo Island. We loved every moment!

Room Tip: The Cottonfield Farmhouse is a rustic and quaint - not for those who'd prefer a luxury hotel exp...

I was looking for somewhere beautiful and relaxing to take my husband for his birthday surprise, and the Blue Heron Inn was exactly what we needed. The peacefulness and setting is amazing. You’ll find yourself totally unwinding. Jan and Bill are awesome people and help you ease into the quiet pace. We had to switch rooms (thanks to the owners so we could stay longer) and liked both. We enjoyed the spaciousness of the Shell Seeker and its cheeriness. The Sea Farer is more rustic and is the only room on the third floor so you have your own private covered balcony. We sat there for hours talking while admiring the view. The grounds are so fun to explore that you don’t really have to leave the property. Jan’s breakfasts are delicious and are a great way to the start the day with the other guests. Bill built a bonfire on Saturday night and the interesting talks and laughs under the stars were a highlight for us. As for local food, our favorite experience was at Hunter’s Café in Shellman’s Point for a late lunch/early dinner. We feasted on rounds of fresh seafood and enjoyed kicking back at the shack for a while. I highly recommend the Blue Heron Inn for many reasons. If you’re looking for a beautiful place to drop it down a few notches and get some sand between your toes, you’ll be very pleased.

My husband and I stayed at the Blue Heron Inn in November on our way to Florida. We loved the Inn and Bill and Jan were wonderful hosts. They gave us great advice on where to go and where to eat. We've stayed at other B&B's but have never felt so welcome as we did at the Blue Heron. They invited us to sit by the fire and served refreshments in the evening. Bill sent us out on the salt marsh in his kayaks and invited us to the Saturday night bonfire. We enjoyed it so much that we almost hated to move on to our destination. The breakfasts were excellent and the room was comfortable and quiet. We will definitely stay again if we are ever in the area.
