Just got home from a vacation stay in Georgia. I frequently stay in Holiday Inn Express' in various parts of the county. I booked two nights - arrival night and departure night. Seemed like a safe bet based on my experience with this reputable hotel chain.
Short story:
This hotel is in terrible physical shape. The outside looks good and a quick fix (paint, furniture, etc.) has been applied to the rooms but if you look a little deeper, the structure and major fixtures are in need of significant repair. Don't even THINK about staying here if you feel air conditioning is important in Atlanta. The management does not seem to think it is.
Long story:
On the night of our arrival, we arrived as the shuttle pulled up to the door to drop off a group arriving from the airport. We spent about 25 minutes in line waiting to check in. Not a big deal and I understood the situation. We were greeted in a friendly manner and clerk apologized for the long wait.
The major problem with the room that night was the air conditioner. It ran but made very loud rattling noises. The night wasn't too hot so we were able to do without it and didn't complain. A close look at the air conditioner made me realize that it (and the hotel) have been around for a long time. The outside has been redone and a fresh coat of paint has been applied but the airconditioner was almost completely rusted out on the inside. The metal cover was sitting on the floor in front of the unit. It was so rusted it couldn't be attached. If you don't want this room, be sure to ask NOT to be placed in room 422. The clock radio was broken and we disconnected it and placed it on a table with a note the next morning so it could be replaced. I don't know if that happened or not.
I would have cancelled the reservation for out departure night but it was booked and the reservation stated that we would be charged for the night regardless.
When we returned a week later, we were given a different room. The air conditioner in this room didn't work at all. Only warm air. It appeared that the compressor was shot. It was too hot to go without air that night so my wife called the front desk and was told that the hotel was booked up and we couldn't have another room. He promised that someone would be up to look at the air conditioner as soon as possible.
After 20 minutes, I went down to the front desk and asked to see the manager on duty. When I spoke to him, he told me he didn't have anyone who could look at our air conditioner (so clearly, the clerk was hoping we would just stop complaining). The manager moved us to another room which I checked over before moving our baggage. It appeared OK so we relocated. Then I found that there were no working lights in the bathroom. My wife called the front desk and got another round of "we'll send someone up shortly". She asked the clerk if he really meant it this time at which point he got extremely rude and hung up the phone. Of course, no one showed up to replace the lights so I had to go down to the front desk and wait in line for another 15 minutes. Most of the people in line were waiting to ask for some type of repair or help with a room problem of some sort. I finally got a light from the clerk but the manager was no where to be found so I replaced the light myself and gave up for the night.
I'm not sure I can ever look at HIE the same again. I am aware that many (if not most) of the HIEs are independently owned and operated but allowing one in this shabby condition to use the franchise name surprises me. I'm not sure I can book another stay at any HIE without distrust. I will certainly never book one that requires a first night deposit and I will remove them from the list of hotels that my secretary uses to book my company travel.
