“A Pleasant Surprise”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 28, 2008

After leaving the city of Aberdeen we were surprised to find such a stunning and seculded location. My husband had booked a romantic package to celebrate our wedding anniversary.
On our arrival at the hotel, we were greeted at reception by a very helpful lady who informed us we had a free upgrade to a suite, which we were delighted about. There was also a wedding party going on and we were told the suite was positioned furthest away from the party, which was true...the suite was peaceful, very tastefully decorated and very clean, a beautiful solid wood bed with matching furniture, two flat screen tvs, leather chesterfield sofa, fluffy bathrobes, additional toiletries, flowers, champs and chocs waiting for us. Together with a lovely view of the gardens, ancient trees and stunning river dee. It was perfect. The hotel itself is well presented, the ha hoose lounge was something different with exposed stone walls, calming celtic music and fascinating history. The 6 course meal was very nice. Breakfast was buffett style, was very tasty however we were slightly disappointed with the lack of fried eggs! rather than scrambled, but in the scheme of things, it wasnt important. Some of the staff are very helpful, we found the younger members of staff less professional. But as a whole we had a lovely time and pleased we spent it there.

2 of 5 stars Reviewed June 27, 2008

We looked forward to our 4 night stay while visiting our friends in Aberdeen. Arrived on a Sunday night to not such good news - a leek in the roof and no hot water in our room that night. This was overcome very well by the hotel - a key to another room to use the shower and a half price rate for that night. The room (217) was otherwise a good size with a modern bathroom, dark furniture and a smallish window which opened fully to a view over the River Dee.

We firstly had drinks in the Ha House - a cosy, interesting and attractive banqueting hall which had an open fire. We then chose the gourmet dinner which is offered on weekends. 32 pounds pp was rather expensive but the meal and service were extremely pleasant.

Two nights later we invited our friends to a bar supper in the Poachers Pocket. Things couldn't have been more different. We were shocked and embarassed at the lack of service and the amount of time we had to wait for our meals. When they arrived they were ordinary.

On the third night a noise had developed outside our window. It kept us awake and we reported it to the Duty Manager. He did not inspect the problem but said it was probably the boiler and he was unable to do anything. We shut the window and took sleeping pills. This probably explains why we were glad to leave after the fourth day.

The hotel has some extremely good staff but some who did not care, spoilt our stay.

  • Liked — the Ha House
  • Disliked — some poor service and unwillingness to fix a problem
