Well, I've read all of the reviews here and was honestly very surprised at the number of reviews for this small restaurant in this small town in NW GA.
During one of our visits to the Cartersville area, prior to our moveto C'ville in late 2007,, our family chose to dine at the Applachian Grill. It was a Friday evening, so we expected that there might be a wait. T(Where we lived previously, every Friday was Fish Fry at most restaurants and the crowds were huge!) The wait ended up to be over two and 1/2 hours!!!!!! Our party of seven included my father in law , a partial leg amputee, whe is wheelchair bound.
The hostesses were quite rude and unfriendly. When we werer finally seated, after our extremely long wait, we too, (as other reviewers have stated) were seated at two booths. The staff had to do this in order to accomodate our large group as an appropriate sized table had not vacated (in the over two hour wait???)l The table was not handicap "accessible" - generally a table is preferable so my father in law can remain in his wheelchair. Because we were seated at separate booths which were across the aisle from each other, we really could not enjoy any family camaraderie and conversation, let alone "enjoy" our dining experience together. Very ridiculous.
The food however was very, very good. The menu selection was wonderful and our food was prepared very well. I love the salads and the nut-crusted fish entrees.
My husband and I have dined there on two other occasions and the wait was not as long. The hostesses were, once more very rude and condescending. They act as if they are foo busy (standing there filing their nails, talking to another hostess or just standing there), full of themselves and conceited to acknowledge a paying patron's presence!!! When a patron enters the restaurant, they immediately see the hostess station. And the hostess can see the patron enter also. The hostess does not EVER acknowledge the patron - not in my three visits there!!!!! Additionally, the hostesses working when I was there reminded me of a bubble-gum chewing teenager who should be working at Sonic instead of a fine dining location!!! If I want juvenile service, I will go to Sonic for a $5 dinner, not an App Grill $50+ dollar meal. (Honestly, the hops at Sonic are polite, friendly and dependable which is loads more than one can say about the personnel at the App Grill.)
I did also notice how dusty and dirty the decor is that is located above and between the booths. It was pretty disgusting. (Now that I have read about a roach in the soup, how they put meat in the same sink that is used as a slop sink and the poor cleanliness ratings - I'm thoroughly disgusted!!!)
The sister restaurant to the Grill is The Hearth and Harvest . The food there is good but the location is not as convenient nor as intimate an atmosphere as the Grill.
The Appalachian Grill has creative menu selections which are creatively assembled and prepared and can be very, very tasty . But the rude staff, the reports of the undignified and coarse manner of the owner / cook (Jackie) and the puerile, unsophisticated and feeble-minded hostesses certainly don't make The App Grill a fine dining experience.
TAKE YOUR MONEY ELSEWHERE.
