Owner description: This beautiful plantation represents the history and culture of Georgia’s rice coast. In the early 1800s, William Brailsford of Charleston carved a rice plantation from marshes along the Altamaha River. The plantation and its inhabitants were part of the genteel low country society that developed during the antebellum period. While many factors made rice cultivation increasingly difficult in the years after the Civil War, the family continued to grow rice until 1913.The enterprising siblings of the fifth generation at Hofwyl-Broadfield resolved to start a dairy rather than sell their family home. The efforts of Gratz, Miriam and Ophelia Dent led to the preservation of their family legacy. Ophelia was the last heir to the rich traditions of her ancestors, and she left the plantation to the state of Georgia in 1973.A museum features silver from the family collection and a model of Hofwyl-Broadfield during its heyday. A brief film on the plantation’s history is shown before visitors walk a short trail to the antebellum home. A guided tour allows visitors to see the home as Ophelia kept it with family heirlooms, 18th and 19th century furniture and Cantonese china. A stop on the Colonial Coast Birding Trail, this is an excellent spot to look for herons, egrets, ibis and painted buntings. A nature trail that leads back to the Visitors Center along the edge of the marsh where rice once flourished.

“Amazing stop off I-95”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 28, 2012

Only clue it exists is a sign on I-95...so stopped there recently to check it out. Very impressive site, all rooms with period furniture. Worth the stop off the Interstate on my way northbound to Charleston. Those who are history buffs will find it quite interesting.

“Y'all come back now, you hear...”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 25, 2012

We greatly enjoyed the Christmas night-time visit to the Hofwyl Plantation. Candelit walk to the main house, great hosts giving info on the antebellum residents, a Civil War musket and cannon-firing re-enactment, hot cider and cookies....thoroughly delightful! We are returning for a daytime visit December 30 with our grandchildren.

“Another World”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 24, 2012

This is a lovely preserve of the rice culture in the South in the 1800's. The family donated this plantation with its land, home, outbuildings, antique furniture, and all the trappings of the silver and china. Big feather beds, chamber pots, portraits, and old textiles abound. The film is informative and the staff very friendly. As an historic site, the admission fee is nominal. The gift shop is small but has extraordinary prices on its items. Take time to photograph the huge trees and marsh wildlife. I went when the Christmas decorations were up. I plan to go again when it is warmer weather. If you love the outdoors and history in general, by all means do go.

“Step Into The Past”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 12, 2012

It has been at least 15 years since we last visited this attraction, but we were lucky enough to be in the area during a two-day event on the property with the house decorated for Christmas and an encampment of Ante-Bellum GA militia on the grounds doing drill and musket and cannon firings. The evening event - yes, in the dark- was a completely different experience. The home is in much the same condition when the last resident died in 1972 and left the property to the state of Georgia. All the original furniture and artifacts of a 175 year occupancy are on view. The visitor's center (that we somehow missed back then) is well organized with excellent displays of the complex coastal rice culture. The fact that this is a plantation and did utilize a large number of slave labor is not glossed over. We were rewarded at the end of the evening by the rising of a full moon over the former rice fields. Very impressive.
