Was at Chateau Elan for a weekend in March 2006 to relax prior to a week long meeting in downtown Atlanta. Saturday check in was swift, room was in OK shape but nothing fancy. Went to check out the winery but the tours and tastings had ended by 6pm. We did not feel it was much of a loss because it is not really a functioning winery anyway and am sure it would be a let down after Napa! Most of the wines with the Chateau Elan label are just bottled there. I don't think they produce much wine if any considering the state of the vineyards we walked around. Gift shop was nice but nothing outstanding that warranted buying.
That Saturday night, we tried Paddy's Irish pub since we were told there would be live music and singing. Food and drinks were just the standard fare you would find in any other pub. Disappointed in the music/singing. Just a regular guitarist singing some regular American songs. Not Irish by a mile and with St Patrick's Day so close! Oh well, at least the price was not too expensive.
Sunday morning, we tried the buffet at Versailles. It was again regular buffet fare with not many choices. At $16 per person it was too pricey.
After breakfast went to the spa. Nice facilities, except that the hot Jacuzzi is awkwardly placed just beside the reception for everyone to look at! At least the indoor swimming pool was more discreet, clean and with a strong counter current that can allowed brisk swimming. We both had 50 mns massage session which were good and reasonably priced. My companion had a facial which she enjoyed as well. After playing tourist in Atlanta during the day, we returned to have dinner at Le Clos. This is really just a private room near Cafe Elan which is located in the winery building. The set tasting menu was very good and creative. I have the 5 wine tasting for $35 that went with it and was happy with the selection except for an atrocious local strawberry flavored white wine which came with the sorbet. Cost a bit over $200 for two but we felt it was worth it.
Monday morning before checking out, we had breakfast at the Fleur de Lys which is a little restaurant in the Spa. Healthy food fare with dietetic portions and great shakes. Although the same cost as the buffet, we enjoyed it much more. Later we took a stroll around the pond and on some of the trails. Most enjoyable.
In summary, average hotel, good points for the spa, the food at Le Clos and the stroll on the grounds. The main draw is the quiet retreat 40 mns away from Atlanta.
