We knew about the Edgewater Hotel because we had lived in Winter Garden, a small, and picturesque farming town outside of Orlando before moving to Key West. Also, it just happens to be one of the closest towns to Walt Disney World. The Edgewater sits on Plant Street, in the historic downtown area as a reminder of a time long since past where you can take a small step back to a simpler time.
We arrived about an hour after check in (3:00) to a completely empty lobby. After a quick call on the house phone located at the unmanned front desk, a clerk came and showed us to our room. We were reserved for room 209, a modest but cosy room with a desk, small tv, and private bathroom. A deal for $70 a night. The bed in 209 was quite comfortable, and we really enjoyed the spacious shower. After the first night, the Manager came and asked us if we would like to have a free upgrade. It was a very nice gesture, and so we took him up on it and moved to room 212 on the corner of the building with nice views of downtown. The room was beautiful, and much larger than our last room. This room had a bath tub with a shower (but it was not as good as the one in 209). The room gets a lot of light late into the evening, and gets quite a bit of noise from the street down below. However, at night it is dark, quiet, and peaceful. We thought the bed in 212 was stunning (to look at) but really missed the mattress from 209.
Each morning we were there breakfast was served at the community dinning table at a time we had prearranged. The self serve coffee was really good, and they go out of their way to make you whatever your heart desires for breakfast (this is included in the price of your room).
Most of the staff seem to live at the hotel, and were very helpful and pleasant, and always around. You should be prepared for the fact that The Edgewater is not a resort, and you will not find the pool, the hot tub, or room service for that matter. Also, there is no stay over service for your room, so if you need a sheet change (or something like that) you should let the staff know.
If you plan to bring your children here you should bring something to entertain them with. However, if you are bringing them to the theme parks most of your time here will be sleeping and having a great breakfast to set you off on your day. Oh, and did I mention there is a homemade ice cream parlor in the lobby?
Overall, we had a really nice stay at the Edgewater, and next time we are in the Orlando area we will stay there again.
