Description: Imagine walking into a small, dark space that evokes a New York City loft. It’s simple, clean and dark, illuminated only by candles and low lighting. Huge red-and-black leather booths span one wall, with reproductions of 1940s-era Eames chairs scattered about. Dead rock stars such as Freddy Mercury and Jim Morrison stare eerily from framed black-and-white photos. The sound of ’30s and ’40s jazz fills the air, while the smell of Italian-influenced gastropub food crafted in a wood-burning oven wafts throughout the room. Patrons sip craft beer, wine, coffee and unique cocktails.

Hullaballoo is the latest incarnation from Rodney Mayo (Longboards, DaDa, Howleys, Respectables,etc). It is next door to Longboard's, on the west end of Clematis. It is where "The Lounge" formerly was. They did a great job rehabing the place, giving a fresh, city vibe look. Has great soft lighting and a lively bar, with great bartenders. It does get fairly noisy inside, so if you want to have some deep conversation, maybe opt for a sidewalk table. The menu is quite good, with unique offerings not typical of most Clematis restaurants. (The head chef is formerly of the now defunct Gratify Gastropub.) We sampled the housemade Burrata, the Fried Green Tomatoes, the Scallops, and the Steak. (Check out LouieLouie's review on Urban Spoon...much more detailed about menu!) Everything was very tasty and service was efficient. We will definitely be regulars! It's also nice to be on the West End of Clematis...not as crazy and they have free Valet in front of Hullabaloo.

“Please don't stop trying...you will get there!”

I went there specifically to try it, blind, no opinions beforehand. Greeting was great, no frills, bar or table. Nice professional greeting by wait staff and even manager. Food has great ideas, some on the pricey side like the charcuterie plate. I don't think that is worth it, some pizzas are or the two egg yolk dish but this place strives to be original, not just anothe pizza pasta place. They have a run for their money right next door with Longboards. And I am sure Longboards is keeping an eye on their own traffic two, customers win!

Taste of the food was good on most things, as mentioned the average or perceived lowvalue things should be removed. Have someone be critical of everything or you will lose your newbies fast. A great creative assortment of drinks, but that was the final downfall for me. You get 2-3 sips and it is gone, and it is not even strong. You pay for a lot of ice and this is not Miami. Please fix either the price, the glass or the ice quantity.

Atmosphere and service was flawless. They just started and I am sure are still fine tuning.

Give the restaurant a chance and ask for honest opinions, and implement whatever changes you can to get repeat customers and keep the place in business. I like the concept and most of the food menu. I got on the fence with the value of my experience.

“Humble Beginnings”

Where to begin? First off, Chef Fritz leads the kitchen with his great team utilizing classic French and Italian techniques throughout Hullabaloo's dishes. The initial, seasonal menu offers classic French dishes (e.g., bone marrow, double yolk egg, risotto) and Italian dishes (e.g., gnocchi, fettuccine carbonara). They also offer local caught snapper, Florida red rock shrimp, and other items. And there is no freezer, so much art occurs in ensuring fresh, quality dishes. My favorites are the U-10 scallops, bavette steak, and roasted pork. I cannot wait for Fritz and his team unleash their culinary skills in the future. Second off, Mixologist Brett Collins put together a very interesting, fresh specialty cocktail menu consisting of freshly muddled fruits/vegs, herbs/spices, and a variety of liquor. Note simple syrup isn't used! My favorite includes Ian, Holiday, and the Cobain. Their beers on draft and bottle are very much crafty offering quite a variety of ales one cannot find in nearby establishments, Their drink selection adheres to the gastropub concept where their a variety of pairing for each each dish and drink! Roney Mayo, Michael Mayo, and Jon Elu have done a great job creating and managing the place. I cannot wait for them to open for lunch and brunch. Not to mention, they have a fantastic happy hour where drinks are half off! Viva appetit!
