“Different...in a Good Way”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 8, 2012

We have stayed at the Driftwood a few times on RCI exchanges and we always liked it. Great location right on the beach and nice walking to the little 'beachside downtown' area of shops and restaurants. Staying there many years ago for the first time got us to really know and like the Vero area, and we ended up buying a condo in another part of town. But on most condo visits to Vero, we end up at the Driftwood if only to walk through and soak up the quirky ambiance.

One of our most memorable trips was with our then young kids, and we thoroughly enjoyed having them walk right out of the slider door onto the oceanfront deck and then down to the beach. There's also a nice public park right next door to the property.

We went to Vero for an overnight visit. The Driftwood was the only hotel available. The room was musty and dark. The air vents were very dirty. The carpet must be original because it was dirty and gross to the point that I would't let my kids walk barefoot on it. My friend who had her own room had rusty water come out of the shower when she used it. The hotel bed was uncomfortable. The decor hasn't been updated since the 80's or earlier. They were doing work on the exterior of the building so there was scaffolding everywhere. There are two pools on the property, but we only saw one, by the restaurant. The crowd at the restaurant which is across from the bar and pool is sketchy at best. Having stayed at the Vero Resort and Spa and the Costa D'Este, I was very disappointed in the accommodations. The worst of it is that it definitely has some old Florida charm and incredible potential due to its location. A coat of paint, redecorating and some very deep cleaning and I think it would be a fun place to visit. The staff at the front desk was very nice. Unfortunately the whole place looks like its about to fall apart and the clientele isn't who I would want to spend a week of vacation with.

Very sorry you were unhappy with your stay here. We do have one building that has some construction work being done to it, the south side of the building is affected at this time with scaffolding that involves 3 units on each floor not the entire building. The decor is more styled towards "old Florida" but certainly the room should be clean and I' m sorry if it wasn't. Most of the furnishings including the carpet were updated after the hurricanes in 2005 and bedding and sofas have been replaced in the last 3 years. We are working to upgrade this building which is why the construction is taking place at this time. There are 7 other buildings on the property that are not under construction and the 2nd pool is also far more private than the one by restaurant. Again very sorry you didn't enjoy your stay, hope that you will try us again in the future, the construction is due to be complete by October 2012. Jeanne Radlet, GM

Stayed here on a sister's getaway in May 2011. It was a long weekend get away and we were happy with the amenities that the property offers, even though the rooms could have been updated they were not dirty or bad. The pools were in good shape and the beach was kept clean. There is a restaurant on the property however we didn't eat there during our stay. For the area it was a decent price to pay to be right on the beach!

Although the rooms were a little on the dated side, the overall experience was a good one. The place had charm, history and close proximity to a pleasant beach. The beach wasnt overly crowded and the property seemed well maintained. The prices were good for a hotel right on the beach

Room Tip: The rooms right on the beach are smaller and cost more

We just completed a week long stay. This was our second visit. If you are expecting first class accommodations this is not the place to stay. It is Old Florida and one of the most relaxing sites in Florida. Being right on the beach means the views are wonderful and it's easy to walk over and find a good spot for sunning, swimming, or snoozing under an umbrella. The units are a little old and a little worn, but are comfortable and clean. There's a bar with live music and the restaurant has a nice menu with great burgers literally steps from the beach. The only drawback is insufficient parking because spaces are not assigned and those who are not guests come for the bar and restaurant use the same parking lot.

If you're looking for a low keyed vacation where you can just kick back and relax on the beach this is the place. We're planning on returning again next year.

We met some friends here yesterday for a drink after work.
The GOOD: The food was great, the portions were large, and the bill for 4 of us [6 or 7 entrees were ordered] came to $66! that's a huge bargain in Vero Beach. The waitress was very nice

The BAD: limited on-site parking, my beer was warm [that may have been due to the large crowd they had there].

The IN-BETWEEN: Kitchen closed down @ 5pm, and bar was to be emptied by 630/700. Not sure if that's the norm or just for yesterday.

Overall, it was a very pleasant experience. Will go back again, and hopefully it will be quieter

Room Tip: We did not seek lodging at the resort, as this visit was just for dining.

Some of the rooms are in newer buildings and their views are somewhat restricted as you are at 90 degrees to the beach. The restaurant is reasonably priced and food is good. The old artifacts sprinkled throughout the resort (and in your room) are very interesting. Waldo Sexton who built the original buildings must have been a real character! I have stayed here twice and would come back again. It is remarkable and one of a kind!

Room Tip: Try to get the rooms in the old "Breezeway" building built by Waldo Sexton. Very rustic b...
