We spent a morning with 8 friends on the airboat, and I'd definitely recommend Captain Lawrence to anyone else looking for a fun and informative experience! He really knows the ecology of the area well, and was able to explain what we were seeing in an entertaining and informative way. We saw several alligators, including getting within an arm's length of an 8-footer. We even saw a 12-foot one completely out of the water and sunning himself on a grassier spot! Besides the alligators, Lawrence has a commanding knowledge of the species of lilies growing in the water, as well as a dozen different species of birds. On numerous occasions he pointed out recent hatchlings following the mother through the grasses, as well as some large osprey nests. He also took us by a line of trees that were filled with various egrets nesting and tending to their little ones.
His airboat is one of a kind. Unlike the other commercial operators we saw at the docking point, Captain Lawrence has built a completely custom boat. We could tell a difference...while the other operators were basically shuttling tourists around on something closer to the tour bus form of an airboat, Captain Lawrence was actually taking us for a ride. That aircraft engine he's got strapped to the back and the natural instinct he has for driving it makes the trip a lot more fun. Plus, he could get back into tighter coves and thicker grasses that the other boats just weren't capable of navigating.
Captain Lawrence grew up here, and has been doing tours professionally for about 10 years now. That experience definitely shows! Highly recommended for friends and families alike!
