“Great organization”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 12, 2014

You can stop by their meeting place to view pictures of area wildlife and pick up brochures and information on the types of birds that share the State of Florida with us. All information is free and you can even ask your questions of any volunteers who are at hand to help you.

“A bird rookery tucked behind the South Sarasota County administration building”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 13, 2014

This is a little gem that is on the path of serious birders and local residents who like to relax as the nesting birds do their thing. The mangrove island is in the middle of small lake. A fairly large alligator also lives on the island outstays near the water. Dogs are welcome.

“Sightseeing”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 23, 2014

This is a small rookery in the Venice area. There is a small pond with an island. Two alligators are kept in the area to keep preditors of the birds away. There were quite a few snapping photo's while we were there.

“Tiny Gem”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 22, 2014

This tiny little rookery is almost hidden on a short side street. The Audubon Society is adjacent to the rookery, which is a tiny island in a small pond. Nonetheless, the trees and bushes were laden with dozens of nests and squawking chicks. We arrived shortly after dawn. Three serious photographers with tripods and gigantic lenses were already there and more arrived within the next hour or so. Blue herons, egrets, and anhingas swooped in, flew out, squawked, squabbled, jostled, and flapped constantly while we were there. Chicks in their juvenile fluff poked their heads up when parents arrived with breakfast and then hunkered down again when the parents flew off to refill. The show was a complete delight! The area is small, with a lot that accommodates perhaps 12-15 cars. A portable toilet is onsite.

“Visiting here is like being in heaven”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 9, 2014

This is a must see for any bird lover or photographer. I love it here and love shooting the great bkue herons, egrets, anhingas and ibis. The best time is dawn or dusk but anytime in the spring is good as the birds nest and raise their young here. It's nature at its finest. it's a must visit. It doesn't have tons of amenities but they're not needed, the birds are wonderful.
