“Old Florida”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 28, 2014

Went for lunch with visiting relatives from the cold north. Place has been updated but the atmosphere remains pretty much the same as it was. Sat outside by the river with a nice view. Our server was quick to get our drink orders, although the pitcher of beer seemed to take a bit long she got our food request. Kept us posted as to when the food would arrive. The free hush-puppies was a nice touch. Two had the maple glazed salmon special and reported it excellent. Included sides were more than adequate. The shrimp poorboy was delicious. Tasty shrimp and a spicy remoulade sauce made the sandwich. The home made potato chips are a must have. Noted the price of a pitcher of beer was very reasonable for this area and time of year.

“Nice view, not so nice food”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 21, 2014

Went there last Friday night for the first time, and probably the last time. 5 of us. To be fair two enjoyed their meal, the salmon was apparently quite tasty. My lady and I ordered their specialty, barbeque. She had the spare ribs, and I the pulled pork and beef brisket. The pork was dry and the brisket tough. There was a nice selection of 5 sauces to put on the entrée, and I tried all five and found them acceptable. The coleslaw was very good. Her spare ribs were very fatty and also dry. Our wine was served in plastic cups. There was live music, and it made conversation difficult, although the music was good....just not during the dinner hour. The view is of the Myakka River, a slow meandering waterway, the deck of the restaurant is right next to the shore, it is peaceful and serene. If you are looking for a throwback to "old" Florida, then this is your place, but probably better to go and listen and not to eat.

“Old Florida style”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 20, 2014

After many years of not visiting this establishment we thought we would stop out and see what the new managers did to the place. So many great old Florida places had changed and not for the better. What a pleasant surprise to find that it was just like we hoped. The drive out on the unpaved road gave us the feeling we were stepping back to a hidden jewel (don't pave it please!) The wait staff was friendly and did their best to keep us taken care of without feeling like they were hovering. We sat inside with a view of the Myakka River. It was beautiful. The brisket sandwich was wonderful and their jalapeno hush puppies were terrific (I don't like hot spicy food and these were perfect.) The banjo players were outside and a large group of folks were having a great time listening. Inside you can still hear the music but also hold a conversation. It was a relaxing way to spend a lunch. There is even a boat tour of the Myakka available for those looking for gators and the beautiful Florida scenery. We will definitely be back.

“Like going back in time”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 10, 2014

Truly a feel of old Florida. Went on Thursday to hear the Gulf Coast Banjo players. Great fun! Sit at a picnic table outside and enjoy the food and music. Fun food choices for all ages and much tastier than previous times. You can bring a kayak and go on the river or just relax.

“Great atmosphere and tasty food!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 10, 2014

We visited Snook Haven after a day of Kayaking on the Myakka River. The restaurant is an old fishing camp, and the atmosphere is great. The restaurant overlooks the river, with plenty of views and lots of inside and outside seating.

There was a guy playing the accordion while we ate, which the kids loved and added to the down home atmosphere. We tried the gator bites which were great, and BBQ. The brisket cooks for many, many hours, and flavor is wonderful.

I'd love to go back on a Sunday when they have the live music too! Definitely a fun place, beautiful view, and very tasty food!
