Six family members rented a three-bedroom suite at the Island Grand part of the resort for four nights over the Christmas holiday. On the plus side, every staff member we encountered was very friendly and helpful. The rooms were quiet and clean, the air conditioning worked well and was easy to regulate, and the kitchen had an adequate supply of pots and dishes. Parking was plentiful. Four of us used the sedan service associated with the resort for transportation to and from the airport. For $65 (flat fee for 3 or 4 people) it was convenient and easy to arrange. It also looked like there were lots of activities for kids, even though our party didn't include any.
On the negative side, two of our bathrooms had ants. The resort sent someone right up to spray after we complained, but we had to call a second time as the ants came back. My Starbucks-drinking relatives did not find the Starbucks at the lobby bar at all satisfactory, and the Palm Court restaurant is not very good. The tropical decor in the rooms is a bit tacky (ok, more than a bit).
Other things to note: the balconies for our rooms (7th floor facing north) were very narrow - not more than a couple of people could be out there at a time. While there are several pools, including adult-only pools, all of them are fairly small (no lap pools). The linens and towels were ok but not luxurious. The resort is right on the beach ... but in my opinion the beaches around St. Pete are not that beautiful.
There are a strip of restaurants along Gulf Blvd. Snappers (walkable from the resort) was pretty good. We drove to a Publix supermarket about 5 minutes away for groceries.
