“OK but not great”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 26, 2006

Six family members rented a three-bedroom suite at the Island Grand part of the resort for four nights over the Christmas holiday. On the plus side, every staff member we encountered was very friendly and helpful. The rooms were quiet and clean, the air conditioning worked well and was easy to regulate, and the kitchen had an adequate supply of pots and dishes. Parking was plentiful. Four of us used the sedan service associated with the resort for transportation to and from the airport. For $65 (flat fee for 3 or 4 people) it was convenient and easy to arrange. It also looked like there were lots of activities for kids, even though our party didn't include any.

On the negative side, two of our bathrooms had ants. The resort sent someone right up to spray after we complained, but we had to call a second time as the ants came back. My Starbucks-drinking relatives did not find the Starbucks at the lobby bar at all satisfactory, and the Palm Court restaurant is not very good. The tropical decor in the rooms is a bit tacky (ok, more than a bit).

Other things to note: the balconies for our rooms (7th floor facing north) were very narrow - not more than a couple of people could be out there at a time. While there are several pools, including adult-only pools, all of them are fairly small (no lap pools). The linens and towels were ok but not luxurious. The resort is right on the beach ... but in my opinion the beaches around St. Pete are not that beautiful.

There are a strip of restaurants along Gulf Blvd. Snappers (walkable from the resort) was pretty good. We drove to a Publix supermarket about 5 minutes away for groceries.

We were in Treasure Island over Spring Break and needed a place to stay. Most everything was booked or would not let us stay for only one night.
The room was super small (a double and a twin) with no room to walk in, but it was the condition that was appalling. The furniture, walls, carpet was unbelievably disgusting. There was food along with empty beer bottles under the bed.
On the upside, it was right on the beach and the pool was ok--cleaner than the room. Maybe other rooms were cleaner, most people we spoke to were enjoying their stay and they were quite friendly.
We left after one restless night and found a cleaner place in Clearwater Beach.

We found Treasure Island purely by accident. We just liked the sound of the name. We drove along the beach road until we saw a motel that appealed to us. It was Tradewinds, we enjoyed our stay so much at this very friendly family run Motel that we have been going back there almost yearly for the past 8 years. It is very clean, the rooms are a nice size. The staff are extremely friendly and go out of their way to be helpful. To wake up in the morning and see the dolphins swimming past the window is bliss. My family and i always feel like we have come home when we arrive for our holiday stay. I would have no problem recommending this Motel for somebody who is looking for a nice clean friendly home from home place to stay that you would not feel out of place in.

We have been going to the Trade Winds Motel on Treasure Island for 10 years. It is a great, inexpensive, family friendly place to stay on the beach. There are always families with children staying there and our children have always found other kids to play with for the week. As a matter of fact, we make a point to stay at the same time as two families that we met there our first year. This is not a fancy hotel, it is a family-owned and family-run small motel that is clean. The rooms are efficiencies with a kitchen, so there is not a lot of space. However, we have found that we aren't spending a lot of time in our rooms and our kids are always somewhere else (or someone else's room). If you don't care for a fancy, up-to-date, expensive motel, this is DEFINITELY the place to go.
