Owner description: As a part of the FKWBC, the Laura Quinn Wild Bird Sanctuary is home to over one hundred non-releasable, permanent bird residents as well as wild birds including hawks, owls, vultures, pelicans, terns, gulls, herons, spoonbills, and many more. Visitors are invited to learn about our birds and the fragile ecosystems of the Florida Keys. The Sanctuary is open to the public from sun-rise to sun-set. Admission is free, but donations to help the FKWBC to continue to fulfill our mission are gladly accepted. The Florida Keys Wild Bird Center's mission is to rescue, rehabilitate, and release native and migratory wild birds that have been harmed or displaced, to provide or locate a humane shelter for those birds that cannot be released, and to educate the public toward the importance of coexistence with all wild bird species. The Florida Keys Wild Bird Center is a 501(C)(3) Charitable Organization.

“Outstanding for Nature Lovers”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 14, 2012

If you are looking for glitz, forget it, but this rustic, naturally beautiful sanctuary allows the visitor to glimpse some of the birds with whom we share this fragile planet. In the aviaries, complete with trees and vines, one can see the raptors - hawks and owls - who have been helped by the staff and volunteers of the hospital, some of whom are recovering, and some of whom cannot be released. Many birds are soft-released here, meaning they can return if they need food or shelter but are free to go where they please. And they often please to be right here, in the middle of things! Pelicans, cranes, herons, gulls, and cormorants are everywhere. Walking quietly and slowly along boardwalks raised above the salt marshes and beside the salt ponds by the sea, one can observe many of these beautiful animals in their natural habitat. This is a working rehab center, and the focus is right where it should be -- on the birds! Educational, natural, beautiful, serene. The highlight of our trip. Please donate to the Florida Keys Wild Bird Center so they can continue on their mission to rescue, rehabilitate, and release these amazing birds.

“Great for bird lovers!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 12, 2012

We saw the sign and decided to stop. This was a free self-guided tour that accepts donations. They have quite a few birds. We especially loved seeing the owls.

the place is in shambles. There was nobody around to ask questions of so we just wandered around and did find birds. Mostly pelicans.
