“Best Hotel in Downtown Tampa”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 10, 2011

Of all the hotels in downtown Tampa, Embassy is our favorite. Here are the reasons.

1) A good quality hotel from a good brand, Embassy Suites
2) Excellent location. Next door to the Convention Center. Walking distance from the Forum. There is also a trolley station at the entrance for a ride to Channelside, Aquarium, and Ybor City.
3) The Rooms have sitting areas and a small kitchen area. Makes it much more enjoyable than just a standard room.
4) Room service - many lesser quality hotels don't have this.
5) The Free Manager's Cocktail reception at 5pm - 6pm. While it gets crowded, it is great to walk downstairs and get a free drink.
6) Free made to order breakfast.
7) Staff is friendly and helpful. It looks like that all enjoy their job.

The only drawback is the pool is really small and isn't a daytime scene.

We have been all over downtown Tampa and we believe Embassy Suites is the best.

Room Tip: Ask to face the water and be as high as possible.

The combination of poor staffing and high pricing does not make a good combination for a hotel. We had to wait a long time for check in with only one person working the desk. We know the hotel was full because we were part of a group that booked the entire proerty and yet they failed to have multiple people at the front desk. The managers reception was again understaffed with no place to sit after the first 10 minutes, the line for beverages took 15 or more minutes, and the food ran out after about 30 minutes without replacement. It may have been replaced but we left due to the frustrations above. As you can imagine, breakfast wasn't much better with the same problems. I will say the food was excellent. Hotels that charge for internet service bother me and thsi is one of those properties. Stay someplace else when visiting Tampa to spare yourself the frustrations I've outlined.

Stayed there during the hockey game. $109/night. Fantastic location - literally 10 steps from the Forum property. In a great back room that was VERY quiet even though many happy fans were partiying downstairs. The view wasn't great but wasn't bad either, however, I only care about the quiet. Valet parking was awesome and efficient. I was willing to pay the $20, especially on game day. In fact, they took the trash out of my car before they returned it to me (I actually wanted to keep an empty bottle, but it was nice of them to clean it anyway). As Hhonors Gold I got free internet. Didn't try the happy hour of breakfast, no time, but we were very pleased by the hotel and sleep quality. Didn't go in the swimming pool but it looked like it had a nice view.

I paid $219 plus tax and they said that the Internet is not included that I would have to pay $14.95 a day. I told them I could stay at the super8 and pay $50 a night and get free Internet access and they said well I understand your frustration but it's still $14.95 a day.
Plus the charge $20 a day for parking

Room Tip: Find another hotel that doesn't charge.

Stayed two nights at this hotel. Great location for events at St. Pete's Times Forum very short walk. Suite is spacious. Stayed in two seperate rooms two different nights. First stay the room was a bit cleaner. Second night stayed on a lower floor and room had a view of a wall which wasn't great. However, the beds were extremely comfortable and the staff were very friendly and helpful which made up for this. I would request a higher floor not facing the back of the building if I stayed again. Excellent made to order breakfast included with stay. Parking is valet only and no free WiFi. There is a business centre and computers in the lobby for guest use. Worth mentioning I also stayed at Marriott Tampa Waterside across the street for one night and found embassy to be superior considering the Marriott charges more per night with no complimentary internet or breakfast.

Room Tip: view obstructed on lower floors

3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 4, 2011

We stayed here for a conference along with most of the immediate world. It was HOPPING (and not just because of all the cheerleaders practicing in the hallways). There were at least five conferences in town. This location was woefully understaffed for the volume of business. There was one person at front desk for check-in, check-out and concierge. There was not enough seating at breakfast and the lines were so long for omelets that we had to skip them the first day (they were outstanding, btw, when we finally had them). Also lines out the door for the Starbucks.

The suite was a bit tired looking, smallish for an Embassy Suites. Loads of amenities, though, including a microwave, a refrigerator that was NOT stuffed with expensive drinks and snacks, a coffee maker, a wet bar sink, two additional sinks (one en suite), redone bathtub with large showerhead. Bed was comfortable with fresh, clean sheets. Cleaning service was done promptly in the morning which was much appreciated. Bed was VERY high off the floor - what is it with this trend? I'm 5'1" and had to climb into it knees first.
The only overhead lighting was in the bath. Not a fan of ambient lighting - 6 lamps and it still felt dark in the room. The Atrium looked over the bay, so all other rooms had parking lot or highway views (including ours). To get natural light in the living part of the suite, one had to open the louvers on the hallway windows which meant that everyone walking past your room could see in. On the plus side, the bedroom side of the suite was very quiet. We did not experience any of the club-type noise other reviewers had complained about at the Marriott and the Westin. Room had a safe, iron and hairdryer.

Despite the lack of front personnel, there was an abundance of bell and valet service, never any waits for that. We never usually complain about valet fees, but at $20 per night, the fees here seemed particularly egregious because right across the street a public garage was advertising parking for $37 a MONTH. That's a MONTH. Also, the hotel wanted a daily fee for wi-fi which we declined. Really - in this day and age pay per wi-fi is mercenary nickel and diming.

There is a manger's reception daily from 5:30 to 7:30 which is great if you're a drinker - free drinks - but if you're an eater, you are Out of Luck - only treat available is chips with salsa. There is a guest laundry, which we did not use, and a pool which looked lovely, but which is smallish by local standards.

Another thing that made us sort of uncomfortable is the fact that the doors do not lock with a deadbolt. The manager explained that the doors lock Electronically, and putting the latch on will stop someone from opening it from outside. The minute we hear "electronically" we worry about malfunction and not being able to get out.

Overall, the stay was not uncomfortable, it just did not provide the same level of comfort and service which we have found at other Embassy Suites.
