“Very convenient”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 26, 2014

Hotel is across the street from Florida State Fairgrounds, very short drive to Ybor City. Shopping and supermarkets also close by. Best of all, there's a Five Guys burger joint right next door, which is incredibly handy for a filling, low-priced lunch or dinner.

Upon arriving, my husband, son and I were met by a beautiful "working woman" and her "friend" setup at the front door! Upon entering the hotel we were struck by the smell of must, mold, cigarettes and wet animals. Being the optimistic family that we are we accepted room 235 and headed up. The smell inside the room emulated the one we encountered in the lobby, throughout the elevator ride and clean up to the front door of 235! As if that weren't horrible enough, we found the beds to have indentations in the mattresses that screamed "we are really old mattresses"! The smell coming out of the air conditioner was so overpowering that we turned it off immediately and put our bags on TOP of the desk! Upon entering the bathroom we found it to have towels that truly appeared to have been used prior to our arrival and refolded for our convenience. The last straw came upon my son lifting the toilet seat to find the urine and "lint/dirt" stain underneath as well as urine that had leaked down the side, and apparently remained there long enough to go from highlight yellow to muddy brown!!! I tried....I really did, to make it work...so I went to management and asked for Lysol, Air freshener, clean towels and advised them of the pooled urine in and around the toilet, to wit the front desk clerk said "hmmm...and oh really"! Needless to say the clerk handed me some "cleaner" towels, a bottle of "industrial cleaner / air freshener" and said she would "let them know" about the toilet. Can you imagine risking our health as well by chancing their "free continental breakfast" too!!!

End result: We left the hotel approximately 4 and a half hours after checking in and was charged a whooping $94.00 for our "stay"! I apologize to my family for ruining our much needed / much deserved mini vacation by choosing this hotel. I will make it up to you guys soon...promise!! To La Quinta...you should be ashamed to send me a request for a review and not my money back!! I wouldn't even mind if it was prorated like it was for the other "guest"!

Room Tip: The only tip I can give in choosing a good room is choose a DIFFERENT HOTEL!

We were very disappointed with the hotel as far as the upkeep. When we entered there was a very unpleasant smell throughout the hotel. It smelled like a mixture of soured carpets, cigarette smoke and animals. The carpet in room 304 was dirty and stained. The smell coming from the air conditioner was horrible. Very small bathroom without a sink. The hotel staff was nice and pleasant. The complimentary breakfast was okay. The beds were very comfortable and very clean. Would have given a better review if the smell wasn't so overpowering. We will not stay here again. This hotel was very convenient to the Hard Rock Casino which was a plus.

This La Quinta was close to our meeting and was a good price.

The check-in went smoothly. They courteously changed our room when the one we were assigned smelled smoky and was on the front facing 301.

The building is just TIRED. The room (327) we were given was a decent size. It just needed a good cleaning. Furniture hadn't been moved in a while and there were crumbs around the legs of the chair. There was a bag of Cheetos left from the last occupants.

The bathroom had problems, too. The toilet did not flush well. I left a note to please use a plunger to unclog it. It worked better after that. The tub looked like it had a big bandage in the floor. We suspect that there was a crack in it. It seemed to give a little when we got in to shower. There was mold on the grouting around the grab bar and some other places.

We generally use the stairs instead of the elevator. The carpeting in the stairwell was really stained. I suspect that when you offer breakfast that is bound to happen with guests lugging coffee and suitcases it will spill. It just looked really bad.

Breakfast was adequate. There wasn't any oil for the waffle iron so the waffles didn't come out very well. By the end of our stay they did find some.

The trucks parked on the back side of the hotel. There was a lot of beeping and idling especially in the afternoon when they were coming in. Fortunately it wasn't too bad early in the morning.

I doubt that we would stay here again.

The place is a two story hotel directly across from the Fairgrounds entrance with parking located around its perimeter. The place must have a contract with some trucking companies because you will find truck cabs all over the place. The front desk personnel were wonderful, and very helpful and pleasant. Upon entering the musty smelling halls, we found the room to be just basic. They are promoting a restful sleep with premium bedding, but we did not see that. The did offer 3 smaller square pillows for each bed. If you want a refrigerator or microwave, it will cost you $5 more. The shower was a joke. Or garden hose at home was bigger. They need to change these quickly. When we checked in, housekeeping did not clean the wadd of toilet paper left behind the commode,,,ewwwh! The front door says it is locked after 9PM, It was not. Our door's deadbolt lock was non-functional...guess it was really dead. As far as the breakfast was concerned, no one who stays here eats bran flakes because they were stale. Worst of all, we mean REALLY worst, was the coffee. It was absolutely like dishwater. There was some yogurt and make-your-own waffles besides some hard boiled eggs, weird looking bagels, and bulk canister cereals. Asked for some sugar free syrup...and they had none. Basically, you should go out for breakfast...recommend the new "Corner Bakery Cafe " on Brandon Blvd. in Brandon, right off of I 75 South/ or GPS it. Oh, for added entertainment, we left when the truckers began burping...must be the food. The hotel is sandwiched between a Holiday Inn Express and a Comfort Inn. If you like hamburgers or great French fries, there is a "Five Guys" across the street near the Holiday Inn

Room Tip: This is a pet friendly hotel. Ask to stay away from barking dogs.

If you like to go to the Hard Rock Casino this LaQuinta is only 2 minutes away by car. The Inn is quiet and clean and has good rates, and the free breakfast will save you some money...I will keep coming back !
