The last time that I experienced a Crowne Plaza, it was awful. So when I realized the company had me booked at one for a week in Tampa, near the airport, I was not excited.
I rented a vehicle, but based on its location, it is only about five minutes from Tampa's International Airport. It is within blocks of a lot of other upscale hotels like the Intercontinental and the Embassy Suites. The area is primarily corporate businesses. However, there is a little upscale looking shopping center about two blocks away. Although it was late when I arrived I noticed no one hanging out on the streets near the hotel.
I was pleasantly surprised that the outside of the building looked so very well maintained and grounds, though a little more concrete than foliage were well maintained as well.
Remember those art deco type designers of the early 2000's and the hotels with similar designs that you find on South Beach, FL. Well that is what I got from the lobby. Not a lot of plants or warm colors, it was stark differences with dark colors facing white walls and furniture with sharp edges, metal and minimalist. That's not a bad thing, it just goes against the homey feeling a lot of hotels try to generate. It was cool, though!
I separated out the hallways, because they were quite dark, with striped carpet of grey, black and red.
Surprisingly, I have gotten used to the rooms in most hotels being reasonably large. That is not the case in the Crowne Plaza. The whole rooms was relatively small, but it was designed in such a way that you did not feel cramped. There were no large dresser drawers or credenza's to take up a lot of small. The work area, the tv stand (LCD) and sitting area all seem to be 7/8 size to create more floor space. But there was more than adequate storage. The carpet showed no signs of wear and tear and it appeared to be very clean.
I'm drowsy now, but the beds look extremely inviting with that puffed up look and the quality of the bedding seems to be very good. Lighting is only adequate. There is a sitting area in a recessed spot near the window. Perfect for watching what is going on outside.
Although there is not a sense of warmth with this room, it definitely does the funky, art deco, cool pad thing very well. There is definite quality in the product and the staff that I've met so far are really nice.
