My partner and I who have recently moved to the area decided to try the Yacht StarShip for dinner rather than exchanging individual Christmas gifts. I found the tickets on AAA for $39.95. We sailed Thurs Dec 13th, 7 p.m. from Tampa pier.
We are both gay and extremely well traveled so this is not our first dinner cruise. I had read some of the reviews and know that statistically people write lousy reviews before taking the time to write a good one. Also, reviews can be very narrow and focus on one flaw. So here I go........
Arrived about 6:35 p.m. Parking was self-pay, no problem and couldn't have been closer or safer. The check in window was manned by a very nice young man who took our vouchers in exchange for our tickets. We were welcomed several times before arriving in a tented area with Christmas trees where we were offered to have our picture taken with our camera, yes our camera. No picture selling.
We were again greeted and shown to our table. It was actually a table for 8 set for 2 with full window view. The ship holds 600 but only 40 were booked for the evening so it was like a private cruise. Our waiter, Brandon, was extremely attentive and professional. It was buffet night. Nice salad, 2 dressings, hot rolls, bow tie pasta, chicken roulade, green beans, salmon and roast beef sliced in front of you. You could take one course at a time and go back as many times as you like. We had a glass of zinfandel and a mai ti, $8.00 each.
The food was good, hot and tasty, more than adequate and the views! Christmas lights. We were checked on again several times during and after dinner to make sure everything was ok. Desert was chocolate moose cake, delicious and bread pudding with vanilla sauce served warm and nice too.
Outside the yacht was decorated in white lights. Beautiful silk poinsettias and green garland inside and nice Christmas carols playing in the bacground. Crisp table linens. Water refilled frequently.
Overall it was a very enjoyable evening. Our check with tip came to $37.03, 2 drinks 18% tip on drinks and $8.00 pp tip to waiter. We rounded up to $50.00 so the waiter acutally got $33.00 tip. We tip on total retail price not any coupon discount. The waiter earned it and it was near Christmas.
The yacht was very nice and comfortable. Could sense very little movement. Unfortunately, the Florida weather was a little uncooperative, windy, cloudy and in the 50's so there was little dancing on the top deck with the DJ. It looks like a nice area that would be a lot of fun on a nice warm day/night. We were thanked by several officers are we disembarked. Home by 10:00 p.m. So $135.00, parking, 2 drinks, 2 dinners and a great harbor ride, $62.50 each. Not bad.
We have family visiting in February. Would take a lunch cruise to see the harbor in the day time.
Hey locals, get out and support your local businesses. We keep them going year round. And for so many of the grumps out there, have a few drinks before you go out to dinner and it will surely be more pleasant for everyone around you!
